Mom of 3, deciding to go for it, but where to go?

Im a mother of 2 (4 and 5) and I decided to go through Excelsior College. Not helpful to you if you want the in-class format, which most do. I just found it more helpful to spend more time with the kids--study at home--plus we are military and with the possibility of moving being out there I wouldve already moved once in the middle of nursing school. I just wanted to say good luck with your decision and yes, mothers of young children CAN do it--with dedication and heart---you will get through.

Im a mother of 3 as well. I have done some online classes and in person. I recommend Phoenix college for the online science classes though. Im doing math and Eng through Rio and those are hard enough. As far as schools for nursing, Im still up in the air. Anything is difficult to juggle when your main focus is your family. I have been at this for 3 years and haven't gotten very far. But, Im still at it and I believe that is what matters most!

I, also, am a mother of three, with my oldest turning five in a couple days. I started my pre-reqs in 2007, at Rio, when I was pregnant with my youngest. It was a challenge, for sure, but I was able to make it work. Happily, I just submitted my application for the nursing program today! Rio would definitely be an ideal choice for anyone who has kiddos and is comfortable with the classes there. Rio is my first choice! I think that if you've done well at other online classes than you should do well with the Rio classes too (though I've never taken online classes from anywhere else). They really are not that bad. I'm so glad I'm not the only mom doing this, it makes me feel better and not so alone and crazy. I have the application already ready to go and printed out, I just need to get these classes done. Did you go to see an advisor at rio or did you just go down there and submit it? Did you need to submit any offical transcripts? I went to college some years ago and there is were I earned a majority of my pre req...congrats betty711! Do you have any idea what the wait time is for Rio? You'll have to keep us updated on your progress!

For all the mothers, what schedule are you hoping to work with three kids? I was thinking night shift only two times a week. I don't think I can do much more then that and keep up with my family......I hope I can get a job when I'm not looking for full time....

Thanks for the congrats! When I turned in my application I was asked if I wanted to see an advisor or just turn in my app (at the Tempe Rio you can just walk in-no appt.). I checked with the advisor to be safe. All she did was check my transcripts in the computer and then took my app. It all took about five minutes. I didn't have to have any transcripts transferred over since all my classes were taken through Rio. I'm pretty sure you can transfer your transcripts electronically, for free, as long as they are within the maricopa county scools. I'm not sure about the wait time for Rio, which is why I might be changing my top choice to Phoenix College at a later date. Rio is preferable, but I'm not too picky about the schedule, as I will have free, flexible childcare (thanks mom! ). I just want to get in as soon as possible!

As far as the schedule I'd like to work, I'm pretty flexible there too. I'm planning on working full time, days. I'll take nights, however, if it's the only shift available where I want to work. My goal is L&D, and as competitive as that area is I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Hopefully there will be more jobs available by the time we graduate! We'll see...

Speaking of fabulous Moms...Mother's Day is on the horizon. I know one mom who would love to have her car washed, inside & out (seats could use a good scrubbing)...hint, hint. :wink2:

Me too, I need the car washed and all the french fries removed from the backseat!!! I just wish for mothers day my hubby would take my kids out and I could just sit at home alone in silence for about 12 hours. That would be perfect for me.

Yep, and toys and socks, and school work, it's embarrasing sometimes to drop my kids off at school with cheeto stains on the door. I'm hoping when I become a nurse I can afford something more upscale but at this stage in life I'll just manage. We are on one income and can't afford a lot of luxury, like carwash, God forbid my hubby does it, he's too tired after a long day of work, wonder what he thinks I do all day with 3 kids, 2 with learning disabilities and IEP"s at school, guess he thinks I'm Peggy Bundy.

Is it horrible for me to be looking forward to working graves and getting away from my family? I just need a job, a career something....besides being the maid, driver, and all call emergency person around here :)
