New Grad Moving to Hattiesburg

U.S.A. Mississippi

Published

Hi, I currently live in Texas and graduated May 05, and found out that I passed the NCLEX yesterday ( WOOHOO!)....Now my husband and I are moving to Camp Shelby/Hattiesburg at the end of the month. (He is military)

Anyway.....I have contacted both of the hospitals in Hattiesburg, sent my resume to the nurse recruiters at each, but I haven't heard anything....Do they actually hire new grads in Hattiesburg? I have worked here at the VA for over a year as a Student Nurse Technician, but I think that the VA is a long ways from Hattiesburg. Any info or insight that anyone might have would be appreciated! Thanks, and I'll see you all soon!

Congragulations Shannan! Welcome to Mississippi. We are a friendly sort here as you will find. Again, welcome!:balloons:

Welcome, Shannan.

Hattiesburg is a great town. It is the home of the University of Southern Mississippi and as you know Camp Shelby. It has great healthcare, shopping, schools, and recreational activities. Its just 1 1/2 hours from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and 1 1/2 hours from Jackson, the capitol of Mississippi.

The hospitals there are very well respected. I am most familiar with Forrest General, which has excellent cardiology and maternity programs. Give the recruiters time to get back with you. I am sure they will welcome a new grad.

Hattiesburg is a great place to live. Been here all my life. I have heard that Wesley doesn't hire new nurses. Forrest General would have to be my pick. Just say a prayer and God will lead you in the right direction.

Thanks for the welcome! I have an interview set up at Forrest General on the 5th and one at the State Mental Hospital in Purvis on the 6th.....I have always thought that psych nursing was interesting, but I am not completely positive about it yet. Do you know anything about the state hospital?

I live about 50 minutes from Hattiesburg (Waynesboro area). Hattiesburg has Forrest General Hospital, Wesley Hospital and many nursing homes that are always looking for RN's. Warning............Have not heard anything positive about Wesley Telemetry Floor- I do travel assignments now and have heard of openings on their Tele floor- they cannot keep managers or regular staff on that floor (That Bad!) so it's staffed with travelers- There is also a new long term care facility in the area- I do not know if they are taking new grads though. I work PRN at the hospital in Laurel- South Central Regional Medical Center. I have worked there off and on for the past 11 years.......Approx 170 beds-smaller hospital than Wesley and Forrest General but I have always liked it there.............Hattiesburg has lots of things to do and you are still close enough to New Orleans and the Coast to take quick trips there for fun. Good luck with living in Hattiesburg!
