how does having a misdemeanor DUI affect my chances of becoming a nurse

Published

I need answers about having a misdemeanor DUI in California and applying for Nationals BSN Program.... also how how does that work with the BON. I am currently volunteering at the VA hospitals and have been offered a job as a CNA. When i did my background clearance to volunteer I was approved and asked to submit my minute order from the court. Does any one know if this also applies for RN and LVN programs.

They're going to want to know about it. Getting a DUI is no small thing, even though it's just a misdemeanor. I don't know if you'll have any restrictions or stipulations on your license or even if they'll issue you one. My advice is simple on this: do whatever they want you to do (all of it) so that you can be issued a license and keep it. I doubt they'd be all that thrilled if they found out later that you'd gotten a DUI before you were licensed and didn't report it.

I wish you the best of luck.

It doesn't matter what you call it, a DUI is a DUI. I know for a fact that many people have been turned down for licensure in CA for past DUIs. You can go to school and even take the boards but when it comes to licensure, CA is bad. Do a search on this site; there are actual testimonies from people who have been recently turned down in CA. I don't know what year is was when they started turning down new licensure with past DUIs; maybe someone can tell me (I think 2010).
