Hi!

I know it's early, but I thought I would start a thread for anyone applying to the nursing programs at MiraCosta, Palomar and Grossmont for Fall 2019. Let's share information and cheer each other on!! I've heard so many different ranges for points...I'm estimating I'll have somewhere between 87-89 points. Good Luck!!

Bachelors 10pts

100 hours volunteering 5pts

4.0 Science Prerequisites 30pts

3.5 Fix Set Prerequisites 13pts

Life Experience 1-3pts

TEAS 28pts

For those who accepted their seat, did you guys get a second email confirming you secured the seat? I didn’t and I called to make sure they got it but no answer..

i just want to make sure my seat is secured.. lol

I was just accepted. I’m not from the area so I don’t know too much. Do you know the percentage who pass the NCLEX, and the percentage who receive a job soon after the program?

I have tons more questions about class size, the professors, and which hospitals we do our rounds in lol

Hi Sharon,

It looks like someone pretty much answered your questions but yes, the pass rate of the NCLEX at Palomar is always high. I believe a semester that graduated recently had a 100% pass rate. Palomar's been birthing nurses for a really long time so they really know exactly what they're doing and what is best for the students. I'm not gonna lie, it's a very challenging program than most other programs (including the 4 year universities) but it's really to prepare you to be the best nurse and it really works. And Palomar has a very good standing and reputation among the big hospitals in San Diego such as Palomar Hospital, Sharp Hospitals, and Scripps Hospitals and many more. The nurses always compliment us when we go on the floor for clinical because they know Palomar students are always prepared and know what they're doing.

So the hire rate is also really good for Palomar students. Like I said, they have a really good reputation among the hospitals so you have a high chance of getting hired after you graduate but I would advice you to start working at the hospital you want to work at if you can or start the summer after you finish the first year of nursing school. Scripps especially always hire internally first so they hire their own employees before they hire external applicants (those who don't work at scripps). Having your foot inside the door way earlier will definitely give you 90% of chance being hired.

The hospitals we do clinical at the moment is Scripps Encinitas, Scripps Green, Palomar Hospital, Kaiser, and Tri-City. So they're always looking for openings in different hospitals so it may change but those are the most common hospitals you will do your clinical at.

So class size, they will accept 36 students and also put in 2 alternate students with you guys during 1st semester. They allow those 2 alternates to stay for about 3 weeks in case anyone drops or gets dropped during those 3 weeks so they can take the spot but if no one gets dropped, they will comeback next semester. And when you begin your 3rd semester, thats when the LVNs will join you guys because they already know the basics of nursing so they don't need to repeat the basically the same classes they took during LVN school.

So for 1st semester, you'll have 2 instructors (we don't call them professors). They're amazing so you'll like them a lot. 2nd semester you have 3 instructors (MedSurg, OB, PEDS), 3rd and 4th will also have 3 or more for the specialties they teach.

As long as you sent them an email before the deadline you should be okay. The office was closed today.

THANK YOU!! I truly appreciate it I’m a little stressed trying to find the right program for myself.

Thank you for all the information

Hey everyone! I just got an email from Palomar and I’m on the standby list. Anyone else on the same boat? Or does anyone have information on how likely it is for someone to get accepted if they’re on standby? Thanks so much!

Hi! That’s great!

Ive already heard from two other students they will be giving their seat away because they were accepted to Mira costa. So that’s a good sign for you!

Thanks! That’s good to know! Crossing my fingers for some good news! I was accepted at another program in LA which starts in June. So that’s really soon ? But I would rather go to palomar, so hopefully I hear something soon!

I'm on the standby list too. I'm honestly ecstatic that I at least have a chance to be accepted in their program.

That’s so soon! How exciting!

I was accepted to another program as well, there’s lots of factors to consider.. why would you prefer Palomar compared to the school In LA?

Yup, it’s sooo soon! Congrats on your other acceptance! Definitely a lot to consider. I would prefer palomar mainly because of distance. I live in San Diego and would just prefer to stay in this area. I’ve heard great things about palomar’s program too. The NCLEX pass rates for both schools are very similar so honestly I’d be happier going to either! haha.

Do you happen to know how many people typically get put on the waitlist for palomar?

Congrats! Yeah I’m really happy to at least be put on the standby list too! Crossing my fingers for the both of us!

I was just offered a spot on the standby list at Palomar College, which I accepted. I have a couple friends who are in the 2019 spring cohort and say that the standby list is usually very small, and that their cohort was comprised of almost all that were on the standby list. Also, I’ve heard that there will be no alternate positions this cohort. Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 had alternate positions just in case people would drop after the start of the program so there wouldn’t be any empty seats. Of course, most of this information is second or third hand so take it with caution.
