Mind games with current manager

Published

I work at current unit for 4 years. Before I obtained my RN license. I went in and had interview with my manager. After I received my RN license number, I told my manager. She congrated me and said she will let HR know I passed. Then, she went ahead and asked me if I applied any where else. She even advised me to apply more places. I am not smart this way, I become speechless and don't know what to say to her because I can't figure out what does she mean, am I hired???

During the interview, I told her I would like to work as a day shift RN. I worked at nights when I first started, my body just can't take it. She knows.

Four days before I went in for my NCLEX, she offered a new hired night shift RN (new grad also, still in orientation) a day shift position. ??? I knew it because I worked that day also. I was interviewed on the 4th, didn't take my NCLEX till the 28th. On the 7th, a night shift tech who just become a RN, asked her if there is any opening on the floor, instead of telling her there is no opening, she told her I was already interviewed for the job. So, my manager helped building me an enemy, while I didn't tell any one that I went interviewed.

I really don't know what to do now. What game is she playing with me?

Two years ago, a tech become a new RN, our manager didn't keep her. She went for 5 interviews and shadowed twice, then she found out our manager was the one who tred to block her to get jobs on other unit. Gee....I am really worry that history will repeat again on me.

I need advice, please. Thanks in advance.

I phoned her and set up a time to meet her on Monday. How should I face her? I found it hard to put on a smile. Gee......

I can not understand from your post what the problem is or if there really is a problem. It was good advice for her to tell you to apply to other places, at least on the surface. We don't know if the underlying intent was to let you know that you would never get the RN position. As for making an enemy for you, the other person would learn anyway that it was you should you get the job. Then it would not be a secret. You can't say she made the statement with the intention of creating an enemy for you. She was only imparting a reason why the other person could not be considered. I doubt there was any conspiracy against you in providing that info. Seems you are reading too much into this person's behavior. Your concerns will be better handled once you find out if you have the job or not. Until then, try to relax, or take the time to apply to other places and stop worrying so much. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice.

I guess from history, I just don't trust her. I don't understand why she can't tell me if I am hired or not. She is just so fake, in my face, she always said what a good job I have done but turn around she can't even tell me she does or does not want to keep me.

It sounds like a communication problem to me. All you have to do when you meet with her on monday is ask her if you have the job.

Also, if you don't trust her, is this actually a unit you want to work in? If I was suspicious about my manager I'm not sure I would want to continue to work with her. Even if the suspicions are factual or not, the preconceived notion that she is against you will be a hinderance in developing a good work relationship with her.

from the original post, it's not clear what the problem is -- or if there is one. just ask the manager whether or not you got the job. if you did get the job, as i understand it, your next issue is whether you got the day shift position. hate to tell you this, but the night rn who is already in orientation has seniority over you as an rn. most units offer day shift positions to people who are already on staff either on a seniority basis or on the basis of a "list" -- and either way, the other nurse was there first.

as far as not trusting the manager . . . are you sure that you want to work for her then?

Thanks, Ruby. I would love to write in Chinese, if most of you can understand. I apologize for my unorganized writing. It, however, does reflect my thoughts. I really don't know what to think. I don't like her but I like all the nurses there. It will be a easier start for me since I know a lot about our unit and pts. Siince I have the license now, I can go anywhere I want.
