Hi there,
I used to be a member here eons ago (under the nick firefly11). I am posting this question for a friend - he is a military medic w/ 12 yrs in, and tons of combat experience (3 deployments to Iraq alone). He just got out of the military and would like to become an LPN in the state of Ohio, but he is having difficulty finding a way to do this. Any suggestions/pointers?
Mucho gracias!

Hi Firefly,
I'm a former Navy Corpsman - when I got out years ago, I heard that Florida and a few other States would let former Military Corpsman/Medics challenge their LPN Boards - not sure if they do that anymore. It's very unfortunate, but even with years of Military Medical experience, the Civilian world doesn't recognize that and you have to start all over again when you get out.
There is at least 1 on-line school - I think it's called "Excelsior" that has an on-line RN Program - they accept LPN's and former Military Medical Personnel. The drawback is that it's very expensive, but if he has the GI Bill, they should help pay for it. There used to be lots of posts on here from former Military that got their RN's on-line - you can check that out. Other than that - tell him to apply to local RN Programs - some schools give you points for experience. Good Luck.

just a correction excelsior is not online, it is self paced. they do have special rates for military (i'm thinking the exams are free for military but cannot be 100% on that). call them and see .

I am a military wife and also a nurse, and if I 'm not mistaken a combact medic all he/she has to do is challenge the board in the state they want to practice also, I've known of other nurses with such experience you get high pay rate for previous knowledge. The nurse I've work in the past with combat experience are often high regarder and respected by mgmt. check with military to civilian transition on his post for assistance.
Good luck

I have posted this a few years back check this out! But remember once you are licensed you can only work in a federal installation, like the VA, fed prison, uniformed services bases. etc.
