hello, any other mtc students here? always could use some advice from a fellow student!:lol2:

Specializes in Ortho, OR.

I'm glad! I had friends who had to retake everything. I personally barely squeaked by on a couple :p

I believe there were two orientations, but honestly it was (feels like) a long time ago. There was one when you're accepted, and there's one right before you start your clinicals. I remember the first one being fairly informal, but you can always ask lots of questions.

I might call the nursing dept and ask to meet with an adviser too, to help deal with transferring credits, finding out what your track would look like, etc.

If you have a BA and most of your sciences done, the Merit is definitely worth looking into. Like I said, it pushed my start date up a year. They talk about that on the link I sent :)

Specializes in Renal-Telemetry.

I know this thread is almost 4 years old, but thought I'd reply and represent the school!

Just graduated from the RN program this may! Any other alum or current students that still come on these boards?

hey, i just got accepted... am attending the 1st orientation in two weeks! i was wondering if any of you all know how competitive the merit program is? i've got a good amount of points, but no where near all of them.

also, @none the wiser why would you suggest and adjunct for the 2nd semester? just curious because it seems that every time i had an adjunct prof here at tech that they didn't seem to care as much or something.

@lelafin: I'll be at the orientation in two weeks, too! I have no idea what to expect but am so excited! :)

i got in on merit. i had a biology degree and nearly all the non-clinical courses, so i was fairly sure i was getting in. i think it's just a matter of waiting tbh...i don't think many people know/apply for merit though, fwiw.

i would actually say adjuncts are nearly always great for the med-surg clinical courses lol. most of them still work out in the field, so they're up on what's current best practice.

the nursing program is very different from the rest of mtc.

souther.bellex3....

Hey there fellow nursing student...can you shed some light on what instructors to take...thanks for the help!!!

Any tips, books, websites to go to for paharmacology help??

kidelicate, I didn't have to take a math. My AP calculus from high school (which was awhile ago) counted for it. MAT 122 is a higher number than MAT 120 and 110, so I imagine you'll be safe :)

I just finished the dreaded 3rd semester. It was hard but it wasn't a catastrophe. lol

I'll put together a list of the instructors that I have heard about, for those who are going through.

101: Horne is the best. Murray is very difficult, as is Fournier. Mays is pretty good too, I've heard. She arguably goes to the best location, and in 101 location is everything.

165: I would recommend getting an adjunct. Seriously, go for the TBA's. I liked Ms Hudson a lot in lecture, but I'm not sure how her clinical is.

263: This class is so much fun. A nice break from 265. OB is slightly easier than Peds, but don't stress about this class too much. All the instructors are great.

265: Ms Shirk is the best of the full instructors. The adjuncts were not bad.

A note about 265/263 semester: There are pros and cons to having 265 clinical first. Pros: You get the hard stuff out of the way before you're burned out. Cons: If you fail, you don't know until AFTER you've done all the clinicals haha.

The rest of the semesters, I don't really know yet. :D If anyone else can fill in the blanks for the last two semesters, that'd rock.

Hope this helps!

UPDATE:

210: Adjunct, adjunct, adjunct! Ms Carson is also fabulous :)

162: Either one is all right, but Ms Glenn is easier. Easy peasy class.

This semester will help you remember you're not the total idiot 265/263 made you think you were. :p

How's everyone doing? What semester are you in now?

Specializes in pediatrics,long term care,ob/gyn.

Who is a good instructor for math 102, college 103 and nurs115?

I was recently accepted into the Pre-nursing program. I attend the first orientation later this month (October). I have a degree in education and applied for Merit admission. Does anyone know how hard it is to get in?

i graduated in may also! did summer school to work towards my bsn requirements and now am looking for a job.

to the mtc students i wish you all the good luck in the world! and if you fail 265, please don't take it personally! there is something very shady about that class and the number of people that fail (and i am talking about all of us with 3.9 gpas, who made b’s in the first 2 semesters. some of the smarted people i know have failed that class). it will feel like some conspiracy. you will go nuts. but you will get through it, even if that means failing it first.

i recommend working (at least prn) by the 5th semester. my classmate exited out of the rn program (she wanted that 265 fail off her record), took the lpn nclex and passed, got a prn job and came back in the following semester. (she only took the summer semester off) since she did not wait a year, she did not have to take that extra class that lpns have to take when they enter the rn program. she worked prn during the 4th and 5th semester, then got hired in-house and is now working critical care. the rest of us that did not work and don’t know people in a hospital are still looking for a job. oh to know then what i know now! (but i admit, i haven’t been as aggressive as i should have been since i will start my bsn at upstate in january and i have money in the bank…for now that is!)

good luck! good luck! good luck! remember, don’ t take it personally. something is seriously wrong with mtc, especially 265. don’t get me wrong, i also have had a couple of the best teacher of my life there too (sorry, in the 4th and 5th semesters!). and i did pass my nclex the first time. i cried at least 3 times during the test, sure i had failed. i have no idea what i got wrong or right. i felt like i didn’t know anything or i was taking the wrong test. but, mtc delivered on that promise, we have a high pass rate.

Thanks for the info - esp about 265... any theories on WHY it is so sketchy? I'm pretty nervous about it already and I'm only starting 101 next semester!

Also, I have a question for anyone who's done clinicals at Lexington Hospital - I've heard that it's the worst clinical place ever. Is there any validity to that?

Also, to the person asking about good teachers: for Nurs115 I've heard that Ms. Glenn is super easy. But I had Ms. Cuica, and I really appreciate her thoroughness because it's helped me in other nursing classes since. For Math 102 Mr. Salais is pretty great. Try not to get an adjunct for math - in my experience they are not as good as the regular professors in that they don't seem to care as much. But that's just my opinion obviously...
