Midlands Technical College Nursing Student

hello, any other mtc students here? always could use some advice from a fellow student!:lol2:

Thanks Barbie! I received mine today as well. I see that Fall 2010 clinical students have first priority. My clinical start date is not until August 2011.

Monik,

I saw the message (on my blackberry) you sent me but I am unable to locate where it is so I am able to reply. Where can I find the message?

Hi all!

Anyone around? I'm starting this Fall in the program. I was initially accepted for Spring 2011 but had the chance to move up and took it. Anyone got any advice? I'm all ears. :] I'm nervous and yet very excited about starting this Fall. I think I'll do okay. I did the Pre-nursing and got most of my non-clinical courses out of the way (including all of the biologies!). I don't work currently or have any children or anything really to distract me so I'm hoping it'll be even easier for me.

I do have a question about the math if anyone knows. I know the requirements for the math say you need MAT 120, MAT 110 or a higher level math. Would MAT 122 be a higher level math?

kidelicate, I didn't have to take a math. My AP calculus from high school (which was awhile ago) counted for it. MAT 122 is a higher number than MAT 120 and 110, so I imagine you'll be safe :)

I just finished the dreaded 3rd semester. It was hard but it wasn't a catastrophe. lol

I'll put together a list of the instructors that I have heard about, for those who are going through.

101: Horne is the best. Murray is very difficult, as is Fournier. Mays is pretty good too, I've heard. She arguably goes to the best location, and in 101 location is everything.

165: I would recommend getting an adjunct. Seriously, go for the TBA's. I liked Ms Hudson a lot in lecture, but I'm not sure how her clinical is.

263: This class is so much fun. A nice break from 265. OB is slightly easier than Peds, but don't stress about this class too much. All the instructors are great.

265: Ms Shirk is the best of the full instructors. The adjuncts were not bad.

A note about 265/263 semester: There are pros and cons to having 265 clinical first. Pros: You get the hard stuff out of the way before you're burned out. Cons: If you fail, you don't know until AFTER you've done all the clinicals haha.

The rest of the semesters, I don't really know yet. :D If anyone else can fill in the blanks for the last two semesters, that'd rock.

Hope this helps!

None The Wiser,

This was very informative and thank you for sharing. I start my clinical in August of 2010 and I am sooooo excited. :) (If you havent read it previously.) I will keep everyone posted as to my progress in the class if I am not too busy.

Thanks,

@ none the wiser...how is Nur 101? Can you take micro with it and be somewhat sane in Dec? Also what is the sequence of classes(for ex. what class goes with Nur 101)? Thanks for your help.

I don't know about taking Micro with 101. I had all my prerequisites done when I started clinicals.

It depends on the person, but I think that'd be a good time to take it. 101 really isn't very intensive. I would avoid taking anything besides clinical classes in the last 3 semesters at all costs lol.

The sequence of classes and co-requisites is listed here under curriculum on the left :)

Thanks for the info...how is Nur 131???

@ none the wiser....one more question...do you know or have you heard anything about the weekend program? I know they are offerring it htis fall but i wanted to know if it was better than the day program. I do know you have an extra semester but they also split 263 &265 up

It's all math. I went into the exam with like a 107 lol but if you have trouble with math, this might be a bit hard.

I haven't heard about it at all actually.

As of this past semester (spring) we were allowed to split 263 and 265 anyway though. There was a waiting list of course, but I don't know of anyone who wanted to split that didn't get to.

Hi everyone! I just received a letter from MTC stating that I have qualified for admission to the ADN program! I attend orientation next week.

I have a couple of questions though. I already have a BA from USC. I am now at USC-Beaufort trying to get into their BSN program (already turned down once). All of my sciences were done at USCB. All I'm missing from the Pre-Nursing Certificate is Medical Terminology and NUR 115 (Basic Concepts in Nursing). Does anyone by chance know if my science courses will transfer to MTC? I got A's and B's in all of them, so I really, really don't want to have to retake them.

Also, how long does it typically take from orientation to start date? I have wanted to move back to Columbia ever since I left lol so I'm pretty excited about MTC. :)

If the science courses are more than 5 years old from when you start clinical, then you have to retake.

I got accepted around January 2009, maybe late 2008. My start date was August 2010. I applied for merit and got in for summer 2009. From what I hear, the wait list is even longer now.

I highly recommend using this site. There's so much information on there. They'll also tell you a lot at orientation. :)

I just completed my sciences in the past year, so that's a relief! I will check out that website. Is orientation just one long info session, or is it more informal? Also, what does "start date" mean? Is that when you start clinicals, or when you start non-clinical courses?
