Micro and A&P???

Thanks everyone. I am really motivated. The only reason I am going to take the two classes together is b/c I will NOT get into my nursing program w/o micro and I have to have A&P 1 to even apply. They both have to be completed during winter quarter to meet the app deadline. A&P 2 has to be completed spring quarter. So I guess that helps with motivation, I feel like I am almost able to bite the carrot at the end of the stick (the one I have been chasing for the past year +).

I'm so glad to hear that it is doable - if not a little crazy - to take both AP1 & Micro together. That's what I will be doing next quarter as well - I don't have a job, but I do have three kids (6,4 &2). It's always a struggle for me to find study time, but I've gotten pretty good at making the most of the time I do get for studying. I also tape lectures, and my current lab partner in Cell Bio (we are both getting 4.0's) is taking both these classes with me, so at least I know that she's got my back (and vice versa!). We study well together, and know each other's strengths and weaknesses - I'm hoping it will all work out okay. I am planning on applying to Seattle U. this Janauary, and I just wanted them to see that I was well underway with all my science pre-req's. I'm also applying to Tacoma CC in June. I asked my Cell Bio instructor - if I had to take Micro with either A/P 1 or 2, which would be easiest? He said A/P 1 hands down, because most of it is straight memorization. Hey, if you are applying to Seattle for the BSN program I can tell you more about their admissions process if you like. You can PM me. My friend is in the admissions dept. and she tells me what they usually look for. But, I can let you know that last year they had 400 applications and took 80 people. They usually only go by GPA and everyone accepted had all their prereq's done before they applied. Some would say its easier to get into UW's BSN program if your GPA is less than 3.5. My friend got into UW's BSN program with a 2.98 and denied by SU, and bellevue CC. Also Seattle U's BSN has a pretty significant attrition rate due to adminstration issues and things like that. Its not due to difficulty in the program or anything like that. Seattle U also doesnt require any healthcare experience to get in, which kind of wigs me out. I know UW does require this and I am a firm believer that people should have some kind of related experience to apply to such programs.

I will be taking ap2 and micro together this spring. I don't really want to do it but feel I have to as well. I can't even apply to the program at school until all pre reqs are completed. I have been working at it since 04. These are my last two classes I need. I will apply fall of 07 for spring admision, if I had to wait and take Micro in the fall I wouldn't be able to apply until spring 0f 08 for a fall of 08 admission when there is only 12 spots availabe. spring they offer 24 spots so all around I have a better chance piggy backing the sciences. I have 3 kids 9,7,7 I don't work though and my husband suports my studying 24/7.

i took A&P 1 together with micro while working full time & i did fine. an A in micro & a B in A&P. you can do it! it'll take endless work, but it can be done.

Thanks puresass. I am gald to hear a success story! If I don't get this two classes done winter quarter I will be set back a whole year or more. So although this is not something that I want to do, it is something that I have to do to reach my goal.

Also for the program that I am applying to it does not matter what grade you get in micro, as long as you pass it you still get the points. In A&P 1 though the grade does matter. So I kind of feel that b/c of that it will be less stress on me. I have to get a stellar grade in A&P and "just pass" microbiology. Of course I will try to get a good grade in both it is just nice to know that even if I get a 3.0 in micro I still get the same points as everyone else for just having taken the class. Thanks again to everyone for their input.

I am taking both of these classes with high A's in both. The key is to find out who the easiest teachers are (I feel teachers are even more important of a factor than the course material when it comes to figuring out how difficult a class is) go to ratemyproffesors.com or ask other people what they thought of a teacher.

I just wanted to see what the general opinion is about taking micro and A&P 1 together. Is it too much? I do not have any kids and I do not work so I think I will be okay. Has anyone else done this? Opinions/advice are appreciated!

I wouldn't want to shoot myself into the foot and not make an A in both...I took them separately. B's and below in any of these may not get you into nursing school. These classes are too important to take chances with.

Even if your micro grade doesn't factor into admissions where you're applying, don't slack off on it. What if you want to go get your master's someday? I already told you that you can do it taking both the same semester especially if you're not working, Micro is hard, and I was the only person in my 20-something person lab section to get an A. Just keep up on all the reading, and go to class every day though, and you can do it if you apply yourself. Good luck!

I took micro with Human Development and Chemistry. I was not working either. I think it is douable! As long as you are dedicated

(And I got A's in all three classes) How dare your school say you can not do that and get good grades...

I think you'll be fine. I took Micro & A&P together while working 20 hours a week (I have no kids). Honestly, I can only say that I PASSED A&P, but I got an A in Micro...and due to an oversight on my school, both these classes were taken before I'd even taken Chemistry.

I think you have to assess how much you are willing and able to commit to the classes. Anything is possible, some things are more likely than others. You know what type of student you are and the level of committment you make towards your schoolwork and that will likely impact your ability to succeed.

Is is doable - absolutely! Is it easy...for me, it was more time consuming than Nursing I, but the tests were not as difficult (micro is a lot of memorization and some of the material from A&P II and micro overlapped for me - inflammation process, for example).

I know people that took both together and worked full-time, had children and earned an A in each; I know people that did not work outside of the home had no children and struggled.

For the most part, it seems to me that people don't drastically go from earning As to earning Cs just because they take 2 challenging classes together...my experience is that people seem to earn certain grades no matter their other demands (unless the other demands are obviously excessive).

Not sure if that's helpful...goodluck with your decision.
