I have been accepted into both Michigan State and the University of Michigan's accelerated nursing program. I feel very luck and grateful to be able to finally fallow my dream after so many obstacles and rejection letters. Now I am faced with a very tough decision and was hoping some people may have some advice on where to go.
If I go to State I will be able to start in May and it is a 14 month program. I am attending State now and wanted to do nursing sense I got here but never got accepted into the traditional program. So I am familiar with the area and the campus.
If I got to Michigan I will start a 12 month program in August. I will have to take biochemistry during the summer, which is my big hurdle. I did not do well in either my undergrad biology or chemistry course. However, my boyfriend of 6 yeas is at Michigan's dental school. When I finish either program I hope to head to Ann Arbor and look for a job because he will still have 2 years left. Do you think going to Michigan would be beneficial in latter trying to find a job?
Any suggestions, opinions, or advice of any sort would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
Hey Parris,
I'm in the same situation as you were... my GPA is just below a 3.4 and I just applied to MSU's traditional program and did not get in. But I was planning on coming back for another year to get a BS in psychology too then I will apply to the Accelerated Program here. I was also thinking of applying to UofM's Accelerated Program as well. Did you apply anywhere else?? And do you have any suggestions for me to better my chances of becoming a more competitive applicant?
Thanks!!
Jasmine
jasmine,
try to get your gpa up as far as you can. i got mine to a 3.4 by the time i applied to the accelerated program, and it seemed to make a difference.
for uofm the biggest thing is to apply right in august when the application opens. i know you don't have to hand it in until november, but the earlier the better if they do rolling admissions again! also i feel like uofm really looked at the essay questions a lot, so spend a lot of time on those.
for msu i really don’t know what changed. i was denied to the traditional program 3 times and then was accepted into the accelerated program. my gpa was a little higher for the accelerated (from 3.3 to 3.4). i spent a lot of time on my essay for that one as well, make yourself stand out and show your passion. also for msu i had some really good letters of recommendation (however, one was the same as the last two applications). i had some volunteer experience for both applications (not a lot just a few days at two different hospitals). i think that because i had applied three times before and really made it clear that nursing is what i want to do might have made a difference.
i also applied to the university of detroit mercy and got accepted. however, they seemed really unorganized and i did not want to go to detroit. it was also a lot more expensive there than any where else because they are private.
good luck!

hi everyone!
i'm currently deciding between these two schools. i know this thread's old but i hope people are still following...
can anyone tell me more about either of the programs? i'm interested in hearing from those who have graduated/ are in the program- what do you think of it? organization/ structure of the program, the clinicals, profs/ classes. how do you balance your life between school, work, socially, etc?
thanks!
Hi! I see there are a couple people on this thread who are possibly going into U of M's 2nd degree program in the fall. I, too, am trying to decide where to go, but I'm considering WSU vs. U of M. I'd love to chat with other U of M applicants and hear about your perceptions. I think I'm going to end up at U of M, but just want to make sure that I make a really informed decision. I hope to hear from you guys soon!
