What you need to do is contact hospitals in the areas you want to live and work. However with retrogression we are seeing less and less hospitals accepting foreign nurses due to the long delay. If you decide to go with an agency be aware that things may change in the future and agencies do close which means if it happens to you then you have to start all over agina

MI is actually involved in a push to get their own residents trained as nurses that were in other fields and no longer have work. They are also very close to the Canadian border so they can easily bring nurses over from there that are Canadian citizens and have a Canadian passport. They qualify for the NAFTA TN Visa which is a treaty visa and is not affected by the retrogression.

You are going to find it quite difficult to get a hospital to petition you there now with the economy so bad in that locale. They are going to be spending any extra money on training local staff first.

And the MI government is also funding training so that is going to hurt your chances as well.

dont loose hope blushing nurse even if there a small chance im sure in the future they will act on this the congress will act for additional visa i dont care what other say. they see shortage now and dont just focus your aplication in michigan. ther retrogresion is just tempory, lets just be postive and we can have our dream soon. godluckt o all of us.

This is the second retrogression in just a few years. And there are still many waiting with PD dates of 2005 for visas at this time. It has lasted total of three years out of the last five and with the significant increase in the number of foreign nurses wishing to come to the US, chances only go down and not up.

And MI is a border town with Canada, and is also the home to the car industry. Chances of getting petitioned there right now as a foreign trained nurse is going to be quite slim to none. Big issue with the unions there over this.

We ask that you use proper grammar and punctuation when posting here so that others do not have issues reading it. Especially even more important when this is the International Forum. And any foreign nurse wishing to work in the US is required to pass the English exams.

Best place to practice.

You might want to look at some other options aside from MI or even US for the matter. I did hear that it does take longer now to come over and I am saddened by that because it will mean a long wait for a lot of my former classmates and even my relatives in the Philippines. Be like the bamboo sweetie, (you know what i mean!) good luck blushing nurse!

Do not expect things to open up with MI for a very long time, there is no reason for them to look outside of Canada at this point in time. The nurses from there can even commute and they can be in the US in a very short period with the NAFTA TN Visa. No reason for any hospital there to hire someone and wait five years plus for them and no guarantee that they will ever get a visa.

This is just how things are there. Most definitely consider another country at this time.

I agree with Suzanne, Michigan has been hit hard with the economy. The price of new cars is very low and credit is tight. Also all the displaced auto workers are being retrained.

The auto workers are loosing health care causing a decrease for nursing. Don't give up hope, but you may have better chances with a lottery ticket.

There isn't a shortage of nurses in the US. There might be small areas here and there in the US that have a shortage of nurses, but those poisitions are being filled by nursing graduates here in the US.

Go to any board (by state) in the US and see for yourself, you will find plenty of graduate nurses from the US who CAN'T FIND A JOB. Right the least of Congress concerns are visas to bring over foreign nurses, with the war overseas and the economy, it's just not going to happen. Also please be aware that retrogression is in session for a reason. There just isn't a shortage of nurses as one would think.

There was a poster on this board who is applying to another country in order to find work until retrogression is lifted. I commend this person for having a back up plan. Maybe the rest of the people who are waiting for retrogression to be lifted should have a similar plan. Good Luck.

Agree with Suzanne on this one. As a Michigan nurse, I just don't see any more hospitals being interested in foreign nurse recruitment. The governor just signed a bill to provide funding to graduate programs for nurses interested in teaching in an attempt to increase enrollment in nursing schools in the state. There have been initiatives to train displaced autoworkers to attend nursing school and fill vacant nursing positions. In addition, many nurses in hospitals have started unioninizing. In fact, Michigan Nurses Association itself is a big player in labor negotiations with hospitals. The unions will fight foreign nurse recruitment as much as they can. Even back when I started here in the 90's, very few hospitals were hiring foreign nurses. Most that did were actually nursing homes.
