Miami Dade College Spring 2015 RN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi all!

I wanted to start a thread for all of the Spring 2015 MDC RN applicants. I finally finished all of my pre-req's, and have started studying for the NLN PAX RN exam. I am hoping this thread, like many other MDC threads of the past, can help us all to build friendships, support one another, and most importantly, help us through this difficult process. Welcome! :)

Hi guys :) Has anyone heard anything new?

Hey Yuremaa! I haven't heard anything new. I am still looking around at other options as a plan b.

Has anyone else applied that can share more info with us.

Hey Yuremaa! I haven't heard anything new. I am still looking around at other options as a plan b.

I just wanted to know your opinions about the ASN vs BSN since you are also considering other options. I'm undecided since I have heard many opinions about how BSN graduates have more opportunities of employment than ASN, or that hospitals are now requiring nurses with a BSN.

I have been undecided these couple of months about bsn or adn, i have heard the same things as you. My first option is mdc for the adn because is cheaper but if i dont get accepted I will go straight for my Bsn because I dont want to lose more time. Just in case I will ne taking more classes in the fall that are required to apply for the bsn program at barry. If anyone finds out more info please let us know

I applied at Barry and they accepted me for the pre nursing program. They even offered me a scholarship and to be honest I was pretty much decided toward Barry despite being so expensive, but considering that Mdc cancelled the NLN, if I'm accepted, I could start on January and for Barry I will still have to take more prerequisites:( plus two more classes:no: Religion and biomedical ethics, that only Barry offers. I'm planning to take the bachelor prerequisites classes this fall, while waiting for MDC acceptance letters. If I'm accepted, this will save me some time by the time I do the RN to BSN. If I am not, then those classes are also part of the prerequisites that Barry requires, so I will not have wasted a semester. Still I'm undecided. Btw I just read that Baptist is no longer offering the Scholarship to MDC ASN program!!

If mdc accepts me then i would go there but if not i will try barry, im doing the same thing I dont want to waste any semester and i am taking in the fall Syg2000, statistics and I dont remember the other one. It is true about the baptist scholarship?? I wanted to apply to it, hopefully its still available at barry just in case I have to go there.

Yes, it is available at Barry and Nova, I will copy what I read from another thread about this topic.

lilian2727 I hope this helps.

5. This scholarship covers only tuition.

6. For more information please contact the school of your choice (NSU or Barry).

7. I did have volunteer experience (health care and non health care setting) and a GPA of 3.8.

Yaritanew, I have many friends who have recently graduated, and some who graduated MORE than 6 months ago from an ASN program, and they are still looking for work. I even have a friend who has major connections at Baptist (her mother works under the Chief Nursing Officer), and will be graduating in December with her ASN, and has been told that all her mom can provide is an administrative referral, but that Baptist isn't hiring new staff with less than a BSN. Two of my friends will be moving to North Florida with their ASN, because it looks like that is the only area where they can get their foot in the door.

Additionally, I spoke with my Dr. this past Wednesday and asked him his opinion. He told me that he just helped a close friend get through a nursing program, and when they finally found a job as an RN, they were downgraded to LPN work, rather than RN work. His opinion was, aside from the obvious issue with this scenario (not being able to perform RN duties that you went to school for), you will be paid less than an entry-level RN, and if you don't like it, the hospital figures that they can find others to take your place.

This is our dilemma!

Has anyone else applied that can share more info with us.

I will be applying in August, Ariel. By that time, there may be some new info to report. If so, you can count on me to pass it along.
