Miami Dade College Spring 2015 RN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Hi all!

I wanted to start a thread for all of the Spring 2015 MDC RN applicants. I finally finished all of my pre-req's, and have started studying for the NLN PAX RN exam. I am hoping this thread, like many other MDC threads of the past, can help us all to build friendships, support one another, and most importantly, help us through this difficult process. Welcome! :)

Yaritanew, I have many friends who have recently graduated, and some who graduated MORE than 6 months ago from an ASN program, and they are still looking for work. I even have a friend who has major connections at Baptist (her mother works under the Chief Nursing Officer), and will be graduating in December with her ASN, and has been told that all her mom can provide is an administrative referral, but that Baptist isn't hiring new staff with less than a BSN. Two of my friends will be moving to North Florida with their ASN, because it looks like that is the only area where they can get their foot in the door.

Additionally, I spoke with my Dr. this past Wednesday and asked him his opinion. He told me that he just helped a close friend get through a nursing program, and when they finally found a job as an RN, they were downgraded to LPN work, rather than RN work. His opinion was, aside from the obvious issue with this scenario (not being able to perform RN duties that you went to school for), you will be paid less than an entry-level RN, and if you don't like it, the hospital figures that they can find others to take your place.

This is our dilemma!

Yes that's true places like Baptist are only hiring people with their BSN. That's why they sent everyone who had been previously working there with an ASN back to school to obtain their BSN. Baptist isn't a hospital that I'd like to work for anyways for personal reasons. The good thing is that once you have your ASN it's only about another year for your BSN. The problem with finding a job right after graduating is experience. We obviously won't have much experience after graduating so hospitals will try to treat us differently or not hire us at all. You just have to keep trying. I also know people who had to travel to broward to find a job after nursing school and they will be starting her at almost 30 dollars. My sister has been a nurse for about twelve years now she graduated from UM and she explained to me about how hard it is at first. But once a nurse gets experience there are so many opportunities. My sister now does travel nursing six months out of the year and she loves it.

I am sure any field that is in high demand is like that. Thank you for your insight, Ariel!

Have you heard anything about Keiser?

No I know people who have gone to keiser but not for the nursing program. I mainly hear about Nova

Hello! My boyfriend and I are applying for the 2015 Spring semester. I was planning on doing the part-time program since I had a baby in April, but from reading I guess that isn't an option.

Can anyone help me figure out what GPAs MDC will use? This is what my degree audit says for the ASN program.

AS PGM GPA - 3.65

AS MY INST CUM PRO - 4.0

ALL CUM GPA - 3.80

I have a BA degree in Chemistry, so I am exempt from all the general education courses, which I think is lowering my PGM GPA.

Hi Jaclynn and welcome!

They will look at your natural science gpa, and your all cumulative gpa. Are you going for the accelerated option?

I am considering it, but I have no idea what the schedule/days would look like and if I would be able to handle that and a newborn. I think accelerated is only offered at the medical campus too, so I would have to drive up from Homestead to get there.

I think I figured out what my Natural Science GPA is, a 3.73 (using A&P I w/ lab, A&P II w/ lab, MCB2010, and CHM1045 w/ lab). Is that right?

So I would have a 3.73 Science GPA and 3.80 Cumulative. I think my boyfriends would be 3.2 for both.

I don't know what the schedule is like either. Yes, you are correct; there is a total of 7 classes, I believe.

The part-time option is only offered in the Fall.

Have you applied to the program yet?

No, I just found out that the exam is no longer required, so I will be applying on Monday. Very nervous! I don't know if I can even handle the full time program with my daughter right now. It will really depend on what the schedules are like.

Jaclynn, I think the full-time schedule (from what I remember hearing) requires us to be in class 3 days a week for lecture/skills lab, and one day for clinical rotation. We will be required to be in lecture class in the morning, until the late afternoon. Clinicals will require us to be at the hospital early (7am) until late in the afternoon.

I hope this helps! :)

Congrats on your new baby! I know how you feel. I am a single mother with two little girls and I am trying to figure out how I am going to do this as well.

That does help! Do you know if they offer options for what days we are on campus and clinicals? My BF and I would need to offset our schedules so we can both attend without having to pay for child care. So I'm home when he's at school and vice versa.

Wow, that must be tough. I hope you can figure something out! I don't know how single moms do it. Amazing!

It is so tough, and I don't have family to help me either. Honestly, I do not know. I think the medical campus offers more in terms of class schedules because they have a larger program. Homestead campus may be limited because I think they only accept around 50 students.

We were required to take CHM 1033, CHM1045 is a higher level of chemistry so not sure how they would figure that out. Well when you go to apply on Monday just ask the advisors to calculate it for you. Congrats on the newborn btw.

And with the schedule thing.......I read that part time had evening classes and full time had morning classes..clinicals would also be morning of course.
