Miami Dade College Spring 2016 nursing program admission

Updated:   Published

Good morning/night to all who are reading this,

I created this post in the hopes that all applicants applying for the nursing program at Miami dade submit their experience they have had so far and also submit any questions they might have. I'm currently applying for the accelerated option but would like to hear what others are doing in the part time and generic option. A little about me is that I have a BSN in health science (2014) and have taken all the prerequisites with the exception of A&P 2 (which I am retaking in summer b June 22).

Right now my biggest concern is the hesi a2 exam we have to take and making sure i ace it because my science gpa is not so hot right now. I have read prior posts and it seems like A&P is the most challenging section. Has anyone taken it as yet? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Also I'm worried that after they evaluate my degree they might not take my science subjects and make me re do them ? ? . Has any one's transcript been evaluated yet?

I actually got an 88.86%. For me the hardest sections were chemistry and biology. Study the book and have a basic understanding of the sciences in general. The math part is mostly ratios and fractions. Good luck!

Hey, don't know if this has already been asked but how long did it take for you to get notified of you were accepted. And was it through email?

Thanks!

It was through email. It took about 2months

Good Morning! Is there anybody that can provide me with sample sessions for the full time associate program (generic) and the possibility of working while studying? thanks!!

Yes you can work while studying. I did, but it will ruin your precious sleep, you have been warned ?

Look I'm going to be honest with you. The accelerated is not worth it. It is quite literally one semester short but I know that many students end up failing one class and step down to the generic because it is too much. Thus prolonging their length in school and of course losing money since they must repeat. Actually for the people who didn't pass the fundamentals HESI, they're potentially looking at missing a whole semester because they don't offer the class during the Summer. If enough people fail then maybe they'll luck out and immediately start in a week.

So those in accelerated, they take 9 classes the first semester and I'm not sure how much of a great idea that is because while you're trying to understanding the foundations of the profession in fundamentals you're also taking med-surge which is the psychopathology of diseases oh and pharmacology where you memorize the classification of drugs and their particular effects. I just counted how many hours I was in class, like actual class time and it was 35.5 hours a week, now add 4 more classes and additional study time....

If you're hearing how people are struggling in the generic with work and kids, then you can imagine that in the accelerated people definitely do not work. I know someone that's taking on a loan to live off of and I haven't heard from him since. However, he's single no kids, and pretty much is a huge book nerd, having already two Bachelor's. Also consider the classes get harder in content with more HESI to pass. Is the accelerated impossible? No. Don't let anyone tell you anything is impossible. Only you know that. But is it hard and you should not underestimate how challenging regular nursing school is? Yes.

Now what's challenging about the program is truly NOT THE CONTENT. It's a mixture of ethics, empathy and enough medical know-how on how to respond to medical distress to treat the patient's symptoms(that's the different between nurses and doctors btw). That being said, the PACE kills you. It's like wham, bam, thank you mam. Then comes the exam format. It's multiple choice but two of the answer choices are veryyy similar, which is okay, if you know your stuff you should be able to pick it out. Then they start hitting you with select all that apply and enough of them that should you screw them up you're in trouble grade wise. But the worst part is that the professors make up their own exams and the wording is soooo tricky. Very ambiguous so those two look-alike answer I told you about now seem impossible to pick. I found HESI to be so easy because the wording is crystal clear. So there you go. Here's the course sequence, click the accelerated, figure out if it works for you. When I saw that I didn't even bother applying to accelerated and I only applied once, I knew that the pool to get in is smaller thus your chances of getting in easier, but my quality of life was more important to me than 4 short months. WOW! this semester has gone by flying @__@

Congratulations LotzOfMula and thanks! Yeah the hesi is such a bummer. It's like an extra test that if you pass will full points it only bumps your grade by 2 points. Now if you fail..... you get bumped down a whole letter grade!! So those that were near the pass/fail of 77% needed those hesi points, as many as they could get. I don't think people understood how it worked, we were told soo little about it. :(

Yea, I pretty much lost my entire group to the HESI, it still doesn't feel real.

Its painful but normal, from now on you should only loose a couple of people each class instead of a big bunch. Fundamentals is designed to weed out those that are not ready yet for whats to come later.

Hey Everyone;

I just graduated from the Generic FT program at MDC. If you have any questions shoot away, ill try to help as much as I can.

I never thought of it that way, the worse was the instant tears following the test

I'm starting pharm and medsurge and clinicals at Jackson. Anything you can tell me about 2nd semester in general, including the clinicals?

Also does the program ever get easier at any point?

Also is it normal that I don't feel fully competant, even with the first semester as I enter the second semester?

* Have you ever gotten a rotten professor that jeopardized you passing a class, and what did you do about it (were you able to switch professors in the beginning)?

* How is the last semester like with the exit HESI exam and when are you planning on taking the Nclex?

* Do you have any job offers already? Are you planning on going straight to the RN-BSN prog? I ask because I plan on working first for a good 6 months before I start even thinking of taking one or two bsn classes.

* Where are you looking to start working first?

* Any tips on passing future classes, especially pharm and med-surg? How should I approach studying in the second semester?
