Hi all,
I've just handed in my application to MDC for Spring '13.
Right now I'm overall score is 82 but I'm planning on retaking the TEAS in August to improve that.
If anyone has a book list from previous students, please send. I'd love to get cracking.
Wishing you all best of luck. Josh
Hello everyone. I would like to apply to MDC for January 2014 semester. I would like to know the retention/graduation rate for the nursing program. I heard broward college have 80% failing rate on first semester, so this got me worried lol I wanted to hear from MDC graduates for FT and accelerated. Thanks
It is a tough program. Not sure how the classes are designed now, but on our first semester for the part time track we had Fundamentals on Tuesday nights, and on Saturday we had two classes the first part of the semester, Dosage & Calculations then Skills, second part of the semester we had Assessment and Skills, it was brutal, it weeds out the ones that cannot hack the program.
Once you get into Med-Surge it gets harder from there even more, it is doable but you MUST put the effort and committment, and most importantly realize that studying is not to memorize but to understand the process. Trust me when you graduate it will the most awesome day of your life.
I wish I can answer your question, but the passing rate on NCLEX on first try is close to 90%; which tells you how prepared you are. Having stated this, I believe what some have posted already, nursing school is a foundation, but the real learning comes in the first year of your job (one I have yet to get since I graduated last year, so tough in South Florida).
Best wishes and success.
How many classes and which classes are taken first semester accelerated program? what does the schedule look like for the first semester? How many students started with your class and how many actually graduated? Anyone have a syllabus from first semester that you can email me? thank you
Just went to FL Dept of. Health website and I do not find retention rate for MDC.
It did show that MDC was approved & not on probation. I do believe they are very reputable.
MDC brags they have been teaching nursing students for 50+ years.
A friend said MDC was on probation & that concerned me, so I wanted to verify.
she must have heard wrong... Maybe she confused MDC with Dade Medical College.
and yes, Dade Medical college is showing some campuses on probation.
I went to MDC and guesstimate the retention rate at 60%. Could be higher or lower because it was hard to keep track of students who went from part time to full time
or had to repeat classes & fell behind. We started with 42 students in part time and about 10 were still there on graduation day. but about 10 went full time and 18 fell behind... So who knows exactly what the retention rate is?! I think it was about 1 in 4 get accepted to RN school at MDC.
Yes it is good to find a reputable college that prepares you for the NCLEX.
MDC was the right choice for me.
I opted to avoid Broward College. The retention rate is low. I am guessing 16% based on discussions from graduates but If I understand correctly, Broward College accepts almost anybody into the program and their NCLEX pass rate is about 94% (my understanding anytime we discuss. NCLEX pass rates it is talking about passing on 1st attempt )
Retention rates, probation status, NCLEX pass rates, tuition rates all play an important topic
when considering your chances for success.
You really do not want to end up $50,000 in debts and not be eligible to sit for NCLEX because the school you went to lost accreditation. You don't want to graduate & then not pass the NCLEX. This is no good, either. Passing on 1st attempt is a good thing. Statistics show it is more difficult to pass NCLEX 2nd, 3rd attempts. For example 4th quarter 2013, NCLEX pass rates were 69% for first time tests takers. But less than 50% pass for repeat test takers.
Someone said to me, "do not be concerned about taking the NCLEX, 86% of USA educated RN students pass on 1st attempt. When I researched to verify this info, I concluded, yes, But that was before March 2013 when the NCLEX became "more challenging".
Disclaimer: this is information to the best of my knowledge & research. Facts & statistics should be verified as this information changes year to year.
Not sure the application is online. Everyone I knew went to the 1st floor registration & advising department and asked for the one page application (maybe front & back?) and filled it out right there and turned it in, right there. Compared to other college applications I've done, this was a piece of cake. Loved that!
Good Luck!
