hello everyone, im helping my friend get some info on this whole visa process, hes a nurse teacher in Juarez[mexico] and wants to make a guide for the students because with 4 nursing schools here, plus UTEP in El Paso,Tx theres not a word about CGFNS being needed, my teacher actually learned of it from here and hes seen plenty of students take this process
it seems no one locally uses CGFNS and they do just fine theres 5 nursing schools ive looked into, they dont have a definitive answer, but none seems to even know CGFNS and have done perfectly fine getting students to their nclex and the rest of the process
its confusing here because, we get alot of american US students and they just need the nclex, but could having an NCLEX and TOEFL score void needing CGFNS for Mexicans too? i read on y!answers that NCLEX supercedes CGFNS so it sounds pretty useless if you passed your nclex
we being next door to US, w/consul & hospitals knowing & hiring us obiously helps, even UTEP el paso didnt mention needing it [they do nclex prep for MX nurses - assuming you have a tourist visa of course
i can see where this would be needed for somewhere more north that doesnt have the closeness to knowing the mexican schools, but here many hospitals are familiar with students from juarez anyway
i am relying on rumors, can someone help? UTEP seems to have some sort of sponsorship program so maybe they do it for you, but those who did it on their own dont recall CGNFS at all so do you need? it or is it just some middle man with a nice sounding name?

Each state has their own requirements. Only 4 states require CGFNS exam but many others require CGFNS CES which is a evaluation on training. All nurses that train outside the US have to meet the state requirements for foreign nurse regardless on whether they are a US citizen or not.
NCLEX is required by all states when wanting to work as a nurse in the US

Hallo, I am living in El Paso/Texas and I am a foreign trained nurse going through the licensure progress.
Foreign trained nurses do not need the CGFNS exam to be eligible to take the NCLEX RN ( in Texas )
According to the Board of Nursing in Texas you need the following documents/fees to apply for licensure as a RN:
- Application by NCLEX-RN Examination
- Fee
- Verification of Licensure ( VOL ) form from all countries, states, provinces and/or territories you hold or have held a license as a first/level, general nurse
- CES Full Education course/by course report ( which will include your VOL ), done by CGFNS, ERES or IERF.
- Proof of English Proficiency scores
- Registration with NCS Pearson/Vue to take NCLEX-RN exam
- Pass the Nursing Jurisprudence Examination
- Report on the criminal background check
the NCLEX-RN Review for Foreign Nurses is offered by EPCC and consists of Englisch for Foreign Nurses and a NCLEX-RN prep course.
CGFNS is not just some middle man when it comes to the CES report ( or ERES, IERF ) they definitely will need it to be able to apply to the Board for licensure.

1.) Verification of License - Only if you hold a license. If you don't have a license it's no problem
2.) Proof of English Proficiency scores - My wife just got licensed in Texas, She didn't have to provide this.
The CES just want to know that most of the textbooks were mainly English.
I would say the best thing to do is follow what ever the requirements state on the board of nursing website. They are after all the ones that have the final say on what they will or will not accept
Texas BON website is poorly written.
A few months ago under FAQ they had a Topic called "Foreign Trained Nurses Requirements" Which detailed the requirements needed.
Since they added the Jurisprudence Exam they have re did the BON Website
And I can no longer find the Requirments for Foreign Trained Nurses.
I also called the BON a few times when doing my wifes Application.
They seem to get confused when it comes to a Foreign Trained Student, and I had 2 phone calls directly to me from the BON regarding my wife ATT and Name.
I would get different answers from different people when I would ask a question.
I finally got hold of a Head Supervisor and got his ID# and only talked and dealt with him on Licensure and then everything went smooth and easy.........

Hi! I took the CGFNS exam 2 times---I pass it but it was not east at all. I Chicago they cancel the CGFNS exam and certificate requirements because people could not pass it for years. I f were you --I would ask around and find a different way. Some states need only Full educational Course-by-course report ( harder to do),and some need Healthcare profession and science report( easier to do)---and some states need their owne evaluation, not from CGFNS at all. You also have to take English exam--look for states that DO NOT REQUIRE SPEAKING PART!!!
I am the one who got in trouble with that part. And believe me--I can speak! Toefl ibt--is a VERY difficult exam. I believe it was developed for very well educated Americans. IELTS--probably would be better choise. Good luck to you!!!

I went straight to the page. Look under application for examination. Read further down the page and has all information for foreign trained nurse. Even if the website is poorly written they still have the final say on the aplication

wow thanks for all the great answers, CGFNS is hard to reach we didnt get through during their 2 hours/day call time - thank god we're not in india or china having to call at 4am but yea, seems theyre more like a bouncer hindering the process rather than helping people from what i read, fortunately they aint important no more =D
just wanted to add this nice article i found,
http://knol.google.com/k/cyril-lemboe/how-can-a-foreign-educated-registered/3p8kyeqem51p/3#
talks of how some states waive 2 year work exp. [prereq for NCLEX] - w/ 120hrs class/supervised by RN
FOR NEW MEXICO i found...
so much easier seems you just need
1 english exam TOEFL - IELTS
2 transcripts eval service or CES
3 fill in RN app like any other NM student
4 nclex dingdingding!!!
Attention - Internationally Educated Applicants for Licensure
The New Mexico BON ...info on intl. lic. req. by clicking on Exam/Renewal Forms, then select "Exam Application" for complete details regarding app.

ps emily how are things going for you so far have you had any problems? did you apply as a US or foreign citizen?
REDRANGER, what does ATT mean?
Hallo thedarlington,
it is going good. I have had no bigger issues so far.
I applied as a foreign Citizen but I am here on a marriage based green card which makes the hole process somewhat easier.
I did my CES with ERES and it was fast and without complications.
ATT is the authorisation to test number you will receive directly from Pearson/Vue ones the Board deems you eligible to sit for the NCLEX.

Hello,
I am aMexican nurse working in a facility--hospital-- in the midwest.
As far as I know, CGFNS Certification Program is not required by many states. However, when asking for a TN Visa the foreigner nurse might show the VISA SCREEN certificate in order to get the above mentioned temporary working visa.
Therefore, in order for any foreigner; either internationally or USA educated nurse whose passport is not from the United States of America, the nurse should show proof of:
Initial Licence in the United States of America as first level nurse
Passed either the IELTS, TOEFL iBT or CBT
and send transcript from the school of nursing where you attended nursing school.
All this should be sent to the CGFNS VISA SCREEN Service in order to obtain the mentioned document as a proof to immigration authorities that you has the minimum requirements to work as a first level RN in this country.
No way around. If a "agency" or nursing professor or even a facility tells you that this is no required, do not risk your self sooner or later somebody --immigration people-- will ask for it and you will be caught.
Additionally, if you want or need to advance your career and go to graduate school pretty much all graduate nursing school will ask for the CGFNS Certification Program document besides your nursing license; if you are a foreigner trained nurse,. Even if you are a green card or USA citizen,
--I will go to grad school this fall and any that I am aplying is aking for the CP of CGFNS.--
As a side comment. English test is not that difficult you just need to take English classes to college level for about a year and you will be ready to write, read and specially communicate( even on the phone) with co-workers, MD'S and of course do teaching to your patients and specially discard teaching.
Good Luck.:paw:
For any type of work visa a visa screen certificate is required. CGFNS CP exam is only required for 4 states and that may change. Many more are just going with CES
