We are having to use the metric, apothecary, and household systems and convert between them all . Im stuck on the ones that are fractions.....how do I convert these? Thanks sooooo much

1/8 grains = ? mg

3.2 kg = ? grams

2.42 L = ? cc

.03 grams = ? grains

6 oz = ? lb

its the decimals throwing me off..........and fractions

Specializes in Urgent Care.

1/8 grains = ? mg - 1 grain = 60 mg

3.2 kg = ? grams - 1 kg=1000g

2.42 L = ? cc - 1ml=1cc

.03 grams = ? grains - 1 grain =60 mg

Knowing those conversions, does that help you?

gri = 60mg

1/8 x 60 = 7.5 mg

3.2 kg = ? grams

3200 move three decimal places to right

2.42 L = ? cc

L = 1000 cc

2.42 x 1000 = 2420 cc

.03 grams = ? grains

1 gram = 15 grains

.03 x 15 = .045 grains

6 oz = ? lb

This one, I have to think about..hehe

here's a website that may help you: http://www.convert-me.com/en/ you can input a measurement and it will return the conversion in a whole number of different ways. you can also click on a particular measurement and get conversion tables. here are some links to some other conversion charts:

http://www.delmar.edu/nsci/jartman/1406-conv.htm - a list of most commonly used conversion factors in doing medicine dosage calculations from the chemistry department of del mar college in corpus christi, tx.

http://www.schwarzflex.com - conversion charts that you can print out

http://www.csufresno.edu/nursingstudents/fsnc/conversions.htm - metric and standard conversion charts from fresno state nursing club very nicely presented

to turn a fraction into a decimal you divide the denominator into the numerator. so, 1/8 would be 1 divided by 8 which = a decimal of 0.125. your 1/8 grains now becomes 0.125 grains which is a number that is easier to work with.

great links daytonite! question: on the convert-me website how do you enter in a fraction? (is that a dumb question? im math illiterate lol)

I guess I have to change it to a decimal huh

Try entering it as 1 slash 8 (1/8) or as the decimal equivalent, 0.125.

For the .03 grams to grains the convertme website says the answer is .463 ??

No one knows how you'd get 6 oz to lbs? obviously 6 oz is less than one pound..........do we divide 6 oz by 16 oz?

Specializes in LDRP.

yes--6 oz / 16 0z = 0.375 or 0.38 (depends how your school has you round)

I have found that memorizing the following basics has gotten me through metrics and drug calcs quite nicely:

1 ounce= 30ml

1 ml = 15 gtts

1 G =15 grains

1 grain= 60 mg

1 T= 3 tsp

1 tsp = 5 ml

1 ml= 1 cc

1 pt =500 ml

1 qt =1000 ml

2 pt= 1 qt

4 qt = 1 gal

1 kilo = 2.2 pounds

1 G = 1000 mg

I just write these at the top of every test and am ready for any probs that come my way. GL! ;)

You can do it this way,

gr i = 60-65 mg, usually it is gr i = 60 mg, but you are approximating..

If you do it this way,

30 mg = grains?

But in short, you can use 1 gram = 15 grains because that is the conversion..If your instructor says it is wrong, you have to let him see the conversion..

daytonite put a better explanation below...
