What is Methatraxate used for? I looked it up in my BNF, but the only uses it had listed were for the treatment of childhood lukemia, which the patient I came accross did not have ( he was an adult with triple vessel disease).
So does anyone have a newer BNF,which gives more details? I tried the BNF website, I couldn't get any indications to come up though!

P.S please excuse any spelling errors,my cold has actually turned into a chest infection, and I don't want to leave my cacoon of blankets to get up and get my dictionary to check the spellings.
Barbpick,
Leucovorin does not ALWAYS have to be given with Methotrexate. It depends on the dose level/schedule of MTX as to whether the Leucovorin will be needed for rescue.
MTX is given for cancer treatment, treatment of some autoimmune disorders (including crohn's and RA, ocasionally lupus). It is also used in treatment of ectopic pregnancy, treatment of incomplete miscarriages/D&Cs, and in a few unusual blood dyscrasias (goes along with autoimmune related Hems).
It is a chemo drug (PO/IV/ intrathecal/IM) and should be handled with appropriate care.

At our University Medical Center, That is the protocol, I am not getting into a Pi----- contest. I have been an OCN for 17 years, you do your thing, I will follow our protocols
No gripe match intended - I am OCN also, and have had patients on low dose MTX without Leukovorin at several University teaching hospitals. While high dose MTX requires Leukovorin, some lower dose regimens do not require it.
Additional use of of MTX is for Hydidiform Mole(sp?) - information for the student doing research.
It would be nice if people did not take unwarranted offense at another's input. It tends to make the Net a less pleasant place to be.

I had to be on methotrexate po for my lupus so you can add that disease to the list of this horrible drug!!!!!!!!!! It causes nausea vomiting mouth sores teeth to decay (lots of fillings now). I finally had to go off of it when I developed an anaphalactic reaction from it. Never did put me into remission with my lupus. Suppose it may have helped so I wouldnt develp kidney failure.

I took methotrexate for an ectopic pregnancy last year. It made me feel like crap and I was off work for 2 days. I later had an operation to remove my tubes (had a tubal 10 yrs ago and wouldn't be needing them) I never wanted to have to go thru that again.
