Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello,

My name is Aaron. Anybody else applied for the Spring cohort? I just heard back from the school and they told me they have been granted general admission into the school, but am waiting for them to admit me specifically into the program. I also applied to NYU but will most likely attend this school because the tuition is less and living expenses for 12 months in Iowa is not going to cost me an arm and a leg in student loans. I've heard some mixed reviews about the ABSN program online at various websites. Most people say positive things but I see some saying that the school is disorganized with clinicals and lectures. I also see some people say it is difficult to seek help from instructors at times. To be honest, for a 12 month ABSN, I expect things to get crazy in terms of work load, as long as it is things I can control. I am currently taking pathophysiology (which is one of the first classes taken when starting the program) and already took medical terminology in the Summer. I feel somewhat prepared coming into program. Anyone who also applied, and plans on attending, lets make a discord or group page to squad up for the semester!

I'm applying for the Fall cohort in Iowa City (even cheaper!). Yeah, their website is pretty misleading because their retention and first-time pass rates have lowered quite a bit since the reported numbers on the site. But I've been following the Iowa Board of Nursing numbers very closely as well as the CCNE accreditation guidelines and the program is...okay. Their ADN program, however, is on probation with the ACEN due to low pass rates. One thing, too, is that the website reports their retention rate for those finishing in 150% of the time, not 100% (so a year and a half). I'm not sure if that is the norm but I found it a little interesting. All in all, I am still hoping to get in because my stats aren't competitive for other programs near me.

I also have some questions about what you said about cedar rapids. I googled it and can’t find mchs in that city. Is that a new extension campus they are opening?

There are two Terms of Service-approved ways to create a special place for your cohort.

  1. Create a facebook page. This link may be posted.
  2. Create a "club" for your cohort by hovering/clicking on the Breakroom link (upper right in yellow toolbar), then  click on “Start a Breakroom Club”.

References to other than these two avenues will be moved from view, to comply with the Terms of Service.

Thank you.

I have a link to a fb page I made for the Spring cohort. Anyone who sees, you’re welcome to join

I am interested in applying for Spring 2024 admission.

I am from Canada, have a 90 credit 3yr degree. Was it super competitive to get into? What is tuition like?

Still scouring this forum to find ABSN programs that are under 15 months that don't require 120 credits 4 yr undergrad.

I attend Mercy College of Health Sciences. I am enrolled in the ABSN program. I graduate in December 2023. The first two weeks Prep U offered through course point ,and used by the college, was not working well. This was difficult because assignments were due, and we had to rewatch videos and complete assignments over and over again. This was done so the assignments would show up as being submitted. This was very stressful for many students. There was a one credit hour history class that required as much work as the 3 credit hour classes. The history class was a ridiculous burden. One of my professors this Spring had an abusive personality. She berates some students, and she turns sand specks into stones. She is an abusive person who disguises her abuse. The lectures are long power points from hell. It would be beneficial  to watch them asynchronously at home.  I'm actually a genius, IQ over 130. I'm embarrassed to type that, but I believe it is important information to include. I did well in my classes, but I felt that the teaching methods were very poor and restricted. I missed one quiz  & a professor refused to find a way to let me make  the points up. This occurred because my pathophysiology class was held at 9 am instead of 1 pm per the actual class schedule. I was unaware of this change because I decided against attending the class two days prior. I intended to miss the pharmacology class at 9, but I ended up missing the pathophysiology class at 1 because the professors decided to switch times that day. Missing the quiz in pathophysiology lowered my letter grade. I read the quiz questions, & I would have scored 29/30. Instead I was given a 0. Forcing adults to attend class to avoid missing unscheduled knowledge assessments is an unfortunate waste of time for many. College students are paying to be at college. Professors are being paid to be there. This is a great distinction that goes unrecognized. The pharmacology class is utilizing ATI's website. The exams had to be completed to 100% to receive credit. This went on for the first 2-3 weeks before the Professor changed this requirement. I found the math lessons tedious and repetitive. If one question out of 25 was missed, the  assignment would have to be repeated. There were several math quizzes. If you rounded at different junctures, you would miss points on the quizzes which were graded on a computer.  All of this was upsetting to many students. I hope the next round of courses goes better.

Hi,

Is the Mercy you are talking about in Iowa? because I may start in the fall, but very nervous, I'd have to move there. I'm trying to find people who are in the program, see if it's actually doable, especially for the price and having to move. Please advice.

Thanks or private message me and we can connect.

Josh,

You talking about the ABSN in Iowa? If so, I'm pretty sure I will be starting the fall term, however I'm not sure I am comfortable taking this leap quite yet, because I know much about the details of this program, like from students. I saw their program, looks to be semesters and the courses are broken up into 8weeks meaning two terms per semester, I like that.

Any advice? I would be moving from Oregon to Iowa. the Des Moine campus.

Hi me too, let's connect. I applied for this fall 23 cohort ABSN for Des Moine campus. I'v been trying to find more specific info regarding the program. It sounds very intense, and expensive but perhaps worth it. I'd have to find a place to live as well since I'd have to move from Oregon. Lets connect. I will private msg you.

Thanks,
