Mercy College of Health Sciences ABSN SP2021

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi All!

I recently got admitted to MCHS in Des Moines, Iowa for their ABSN program for Spring 2021. For current or graduated students, I was curious to know what the school is like and what the program is like. Is it a good program overall? I really appreciate any info! Thanks!

I am from CA as well and I did look into this a lot before I came to Iowa. Im not sure if they still are but the CA BON was very difficult to get ahold of maybe because of COVID. I contacted Mercy before coming and they said that they did have issue with students having difficulty with transferring their license to CA from IA in the past few years but there are several people from CA in the past and currently who are going through the process to be licensed in CA. MCHS is accredited. If you have specific questions I would contact Mercy or even try contacting the CA BON.

So you are currently in the program and plan on returning to CA? Do you know anyone who has had success being licensed in CA after graduating from Mercy? I tried contacting CA BON and was unsuccessful and haven’t heard back from my mercy counselor yet.

Yes I do plan on going back to CA. I don't know anyone personally going through it and its hard to get information from people in the semesters before me because we aren't going to in class so I only know people in my class. I know there are a lot of people from California in this program who go back and I haven't heard of anyone having difficulty.

Okay thank you for the info ? would you recommend this program?

So far its been a great experience. The faculty are so helpful and there are tutors that can help as well. They would do one-on-one meeting with you every week if you needed it. There is a lot of information and its all stuff you really have to understand because we are going to be taking care of patients so for me it just makes it that more important for me to really understand the material. so far I highly recommend it and I honestly am grateful to be able to go to nursing school because CA schools can expensive and super impacted.

That's great to hear! I'm looking forward to attending. Does the first term start with Patho as listed?

Hi all.

I applied for Fall 2021 program. I am still waiting for all my transcripts to come in to be evaluated. According to the admission advisor, there is still time to get accepted..

Did you all find that it was an easy program to get into?

I have all the prereq's. Some are over 5 years old,but they do not seems to care about that right?

Also, are the first few weeks online? Or do you have to be in Iowa. I will be relocating from California and wouldn't want to move until I have to

Thanks in advance!

Hi Micho87,

I will try to answer some of your questions.

"Was wondering if you finished the ABSN and was able to get licensed in CA?!"

Answer: I am from Oregon and will remain in Iowa after completion of the program. So, I am not sure about that but I have posted this on the fb page which you are welcome to join. The name is "Mercy College of Health Sciences - ABSN Fall 2021 Cohort" and I help manage the page. Their is a few students who will be returning to CA after completion in August.

"Did you all find that it was an easy program to get into?"

Answer: I personally did not think it was a very hard program to get into. Remember, Iowa does not have the same nursing/job landscape as CA or OR. The pay is less in Iowa so the competition is less intense. Where I'm from, a 30 student RN ADN program at a community college will have HUNDREDS of applicants!

However, I had plenty of credits and an above average GPA (3.5 or something). We have 90 people in our cohort with a wide variety of educational back grounds. I imagine that if you fill out all the required paperwork and make sure to get all your stuff in on time, then you should have no problem getting in. Just be sure to promptly follow up with your admissions advisor and do whatever they say.

Also, my A&P was over 5 years old and that wasn't a problem.

"Are the first few weeks online? Or do you have to be in Iowa"

Answer: It would be best to be in Iowa at least a week before the 1st day of class. You will start with labs almost immediately and those are weekly. Also, you're gonna want to get your housing situation figured out beforehand. The program can be quite a bit of work and you don't want to be worrying about anything accept for school work.

I hope I was able to answer your questions and please request to join the facebook page, the students there are very nice and helpful. Good luck!!

I graduated Mercys ABSN program and am back in CA working. I know of several other people in my cohort also got their license in CA with no issues.
