Men in the OB

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hi Everyone,

I am a student nurse about to begin my OB rotation. I am from a theory standpoint looking forward to it but was wondering if anybody could give me an idea what the reaction might be to a male nurse from patients.

Do you think they will be accepting or will I be making anyone uncomfortable? Thanks for your help!!!

man I been away fro months and come back to this topic again. It feels like the movie ground hog day:)

I am a male L&D rn and my patients really like me:)

when i have more time i would be glad to share experiences with anyone interested.

it is good to be back here and see some of the old timers still here:)

There are a few male L&D RN's that post on this forum. I look forward to them seeing this discussion and sharing their experiences.

I agree with people asking what is the difference between a male MD and male RN. But, I had never thought of the fact that every time my male OBGYN does an exam he has a nurse step in. Would the unit be asking for a lawsuit from some money-hungry pt that says her male RN did something unethical? We have only once had a male on our unit and I never heard of any complaints or problems with it. But, he was VERY professional and liked by everyone we worked with.

Hmmmm....interesting discussion.

that is a concern but few realize that the most sued gender is in ob in a recent study is female. so it only makes sense if one is worried about lawsuits that they require females as well as males to use escourts during exams:)

I think that no area of nursing should be off-limits to one or the other gender. It's great to have a caring compassionate nurse- man or woman to care for and advocate for you. True mom is our primary pt. in L/D but we care for the whole family. It's great for dad to have a caring and kind role model too. I had a pt. last week whose hubby wants to go into nursing, but he prefers L/D or Peds. Right now he works as a heavy equipment operator and feels it's just not what he wants to do w/ the rest of his life. She was asking me if he'd be well-recieved as a man in one of these areas. He seemed like a really nice guy and I hope he pursues it. I told her I hope he goes for it. Though I'm a female one of my "mentors" when I was in high school volunteering at a hospital was a peds nurse who also happened to be a man.

I personally wouldn't like a male nurse while I was delivering. Same goes for a male doctor. I felt weird with the women so there was no way I would have a male do it. I'm not saying that one is a better nurse than the other, I just wasen't comfortable with the men. Of course I also turned away the female student who wanted to watch. I only wanted my husband, doctor and the nurse in teh deliver room... ended up with a csection and had about 10 people (including men) seeing everything. (by that time i didn't care though lol)

that is your right as a patient and your choice. to me it is important that each person has the opportunity to have the birth of their choice if possible. that includes who attends your birth. some prefer males some prefer females others it don't matter.

in my opinion it really should not matter what gender race or orientation is. but especially during labor and birth the patients comfort is of utmost importence to me. so i always honor their wishes:)

from my experience I have been overwhelmed by the number of patients that request and compliment me.I thank god for that blessing everyday.

I never really thought of the possibility that I could have a male nurse..hmmm? Funny as this may sound, I'm more comfortable with my male OB docs (allthough I'm getting used to the CNM they added to the group). I guess if I was younger and a first time mom, I might be a little uneasy, but with #3 on his way soon, I would welcome any nurse who will give me good compasionate care. As far as students, we were all a student once.....

To turn the question around..how many of us female nurses have taken care of prostate pts or vastectomies and are still able to give care and teach our male pts?
