Hi all,

Does anyone out there work for Sloan-Kettering and have any words of wisdom? I'm considering work there on a med-surg type floor as a new nurse.

I noticed that they are not yet very technological as far as giving meds and charting... Does this affect patient safety and quality of care? Are nurses overloaded with paperwork?

Hey I did my inter there last summer ...it was great! The nurses really loved working there and the patients really appriciate your work. It can be stressful and emotional as well....but very rewarding at the same time. I just accepted a job there as a new nurse. I will be starting very soon! oh and their pay just increased as well.

Hi: I am a Cancer Information Specialist at MSK. I will be starting Nursing school in the fall. Can you tell me how much they raised the salary to? I know it used to be $71,000 for new grads. Thanks!

BUT what about the question re: computerized medication charting? Is it true that they still use pen-and-paper with those blue sheets and tiny little columns that are great facilitators of med errors???

yes it's true they are STILL pen and paper. Worse, they are not on pyxis for meds or anything. seems to be that they are very outdated. one of the reasons why i opted not to work there. plus i'm not so sure that they have a pension plan... when i spoke with someone in february, i was told new grads start at 70 plus 7k nights differential.

Thanks for the info. I read somewhere that only about five percent of US hospitals have computerized medication charting...too bad with messy handwriting and misplaced paper causing so many errors...

And I think you're right about the LACK of a pension plan for nurses...largely because Sloan is NOT Unionized.....nurses at hospitals with NYSNA-Union representation can move from any of 26 hospitals to the other without losing Pension-vesting rights...there's another thread in this forum re": this matter--I'll find it and post it.
