This just depends where you are at, in my area of TN all of the NPs that work in hospitals are FNPs, they received on the job training.Even the Np working for the ICU is a FNP who does central lines, intubations, etc because the hospital trained her....
Honestly part to the reason so many people do go back to NP school is the lack of wage increases for nursing. In the northeast TN area, wages for nurses are horrible. I started at $18 when I finished in 2009.
It seems to me that the issue is it makes it harder for them to find work and then they use education as a reason to justify their feelings on their own hardship.

I highly doubt that you would make less since the VA operated on NURSE levels and you can't get to a 3-5 unless you have a masters or doctorate. You can get a level 3 with a BSN but usually have to do system wide changes. Its' also impossible to move...
