Meeting AHPRA requirements as a International Trained Nurse from the Philippines

World Registration

Published

Hi everyone, I just received my referral letter yesterday and has started to look for school for the march intake. My sisters (who will be sponsoring me for the bridging program) advised me not to go to a university since what ahpra wants is only completing the bridging program that will lead to registration. for now, I have downlisted my options to ETEA (education, training, employment australia) and IHNA (Institute of Health and Nursing Australia). Both are located in heidelberg Victoria, tuitiom fee of ETEA is 9999, IHNA is 10, 900.

In regards to this, can anyone from here advise me about the credibility of ETEA? So far it has won my heart since they promised me that the area for clinical placement is in Melbourne (which will save me from accomodation expenses). ETEA is listed in the approved programs of study in AHPRA so I would like to trust that it is okay to enroll with them.

As for IHNA, they have not responded where the area of clinicsl placement yet so I am still hanging to enroll in their institutuion.

Is there anyone here taking the 2015 intake for ETEA or IHNA?

Me: IHNA Mar 30 intake Melbourne. Mind you, Melbourne is quite big and getting from one end to another is rather tiresome.

@Nimsay: Don't stress yourself too much. Go to Deakin International portal and create an account, fill in the form and scan all the required documents. Deakin wasn't familiar with my school as well and I shifted from an entirely different field into nursing. 3 weeks later they gave me a response of a conditional offer and was requesting that I post certified true copies of my credentials and make the initial payment. Visas however, are a different issue. I would suggest working with IDP as they do not charge.

You'll need to fill in this form and scan it back to them

@jmolina85I checked the routes via ptc from my sisters address, etea is accessible thru one bus ride at 34 mins, while ihna (which I am wondering only 3 mintues away from etea) is accessible thru either bus, train or tram at least 2 rides and will take at least 54 mins to more than an hour. I just hope ihna will tell me the area of clinical placement so I cam already decide. Deakin uni was my first choice simce it is only in the neighborhood, however the first intake will commence on May. Too long to wait. Monash is also nearby however tuition is a costly. How did you start with the medicals and visa? Im also planning to ask help from idp for visa processing and enrollmemt since it's free, it's just that I have to ask them if they entertain students who took oet instead of ielts from idp. And they are by schedule.

Happy New Year, everyone! Congratulations to those who already have their eligibility to tale the BP. Don't worry about the refusal letter, it's part of it. The referral letter is all that you need.

@jmolina1985

Since you are already in Melbourne, I wanted to ask you for any suggestion and recommendation about my future circumstances.

1. I will study in Monash University in Clayton. I believe it is south of Melbourne CBD. I need to arrange an accommodation for just 7 days because my clinical placement will be in a different place. I already sent messages to ads on flatmates.com, they cannot welcome me because they want long term stay arrangement. Do you think I can find one?

2. I will have my Clinical Placement at John Fawkner Private Hospital, which is north of CBD and closer to it. I also sent messages via flatmates.com and only few would bargain as of the moment. I will try to message them back next year. I am looking for a room for only 100-130AUD which would save me a lot. Haha. Are there other ways to find accommodation? Gumtree.com ads are not replying.

3. About transportation, how would you go around Melbourne? How could I save for transpo? I believe there's Myki. How much is the usual cost/day?

Thank you.

Happy new year to you mate and see you soon.

About your questions:

1. Since it is only a week, finding a short stay accommodation would be difficult. I would look into backpacker hotels.

Try this website: https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CFAQFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.studenthostel.net%2Fhostel.php%3Fid%3DMON&ei=2hakVLfiH6KomgW-8IDADA&usg=AFQjCNHd_0Bx7qPaWNALEC6kdEsdf6I61w

If you went with ELP, I would suggest asking the agency for some of their students who can possibly share an accommodation with you. Try asking the uni itself for accommodation options considering your situation.

2. Again, the best bet would be to ask the schools. There is a nearby Filo community that I know in neighboring Coburg. I'll ask around. Consider as well, that the hospital may have lodging options. I am too far away to aid you in this but I'll drum up my contacts in the area and see if they know of anybody with a spare room to lease.

3. MyKi is the way. Since Zone 1 and Zone 2 will be merging soon, I would recommend getting a monthly pass (129 AUD/28 days) and then weekly or fortnightly afterwards. That would be the cheapest and most economical way of doing it. Loading via the machine would be an easy task. Do not rush on this account, try to see first where your accommodation would be and determine how often you need to use the pubic transport service as daily basis may prove to be more economical in your case.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I would like to know who among you is planning to have their bridging program in Lonsdale Institute this coming February. Thank you! :D

FYI:

For those people who are starting their immunizations, I got an information from a friend in Melbourne. She said that they do not honor the Mantoux test anymore but instead we should have the Quantiferon assay (blood test).

Question:

I had my chickenpox during elementary days, do I still need to have the varicella vaccine?

Congratulations! I'm afraid Lonsdale Institute's price is beyond what I can afford.

The best people to ask would be the institute itself. Alpine Health (Lonsdale's partner) would be in the best position to answer that.

As for Mantoux, if you were to do the painful process here, it would be:

1. Mantoux (if pos)

2. Chest XR (regardless, refer to Inf Diseases)

3. Order for QF test and Liver Funct Test

The ID doctor in here privided a letter that despite having a positive mantoux, it is likely that the TB is in remission and that I am not infectious and pose no risk to the public.

Ask the school, such a letter might suffice.

Ask as the school as well if a titer test would suffice since you have no records. Varicella titer is offered by NKTI.

Hi aui24k! I'm planning to go for the May11 intake at IHNA. Here's what they emailed me regarding clinical placements:

Some of the current clinical placement venues include;

• Healthscope Hospitals in Victoria / WA

• St. John of God Hospital

• Murrumbidgee Local Health District Hospital

• Hunter New England Local Health District Hospital

• Northern Sydney Local Health District Hospital

• Swan Kalamunda Health Service

• Sale- Central Gippsland Health Services

• Portland District Health

jmolina1985, I'm quite confused with the initial enrollment process. I only have to sign the offer acceptance form and pay the initial fee right? One of the attachments in the email says I have to complete the immunization requirements before sending me a CoA, but I still have some pending immunizations to comply.

I'm not quite sure. I haven't paid the full amount yet, just the application fee to secure a slot. I would suggest e-mailing their staff on what to do, they're quite prompt. As far as I know, you would need the CoA to apply for a visa. Any chance you can make it on the Mar 30 intake?

@jmolina1985

Thank you for the information.

Are you sure that the Varicella Titer is only offered at NKTI?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I'm quite positive. I had my tests done more than a year ago and PGH told me that only NKTI has them.
