Medical Assistant to RN

Published

I am currently struggling to decide what to do. I just got accepted to Notre Dame College for fall of 2014. I am a wife and mother of 5 children and I am currently in a medical assistant program. I graduate May of 2013. I am struggling because the classes at Notre Dame are full-time and no evenings. I want to work as a medical assistant but I don't know how I can do that because most medical assistant jobs are in the mornings and I refuse to give up on this. I NEED SOME ADVICE!!!!!!!!!!

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

Why did you apply to a program with full time day classes when you knew it would be an issue?

I did not know they were full time classes til I got there at my interview. It is not a issue at all I just wanted to hear from others that were or are in my situation because hearing from others can help me get a understanding of things. But I wont allow it to stop me I know that I may have to sacrifice somethings in order to better myself.

So what are you asking exactly? What part do you not understand?

Check into jobs that offer weekend/evening/overnight hours. Or work lots of overtime and stop working once you start your program.

I AM not asking a question just need advice that is all but thanks for replying

Do you plan on being a medical assistant for long? Did you decide to go into nursing school before or after going for your MA? Just wondering. I'm still taking my prereqs for nursing school, and I see people in other healthcare professions (CNAs, pharm techs, phlebotomists, etc) in my classes, but never any currently employed as medical assistants. Probably for the same reason that you have. You'll either have to find another school that offers night courses, or give up being a medical assistant in order to attend the college that you've been accepted to. Sorry, it seems like a tough choice either way. Maybe you should be a MA for a while before you decide on what to do.

If your classes are in the morning and there is no other option then you need to find a position for the off shifts. Try getting a nurses aid job. Maybe getting your CNA might prove to be more productive for being a nurse.

Good Luck!

If you don't want to give up on being an MA, (which I think is what you're saying) then don't, unless you do as others have said and look for a different school that offers an evening program. Which still might not work because some evening programs still start around 3pm. So you choose, nursing school or working as an MA. Depending on where you're located, you might not even have a job schedule to worry about. I hear its tough for MA's to find work

I was a medical assistant as well for 7 years working in a doctors office but when I started nursing school I had to leave because I couldn't work M-F 8-5 and I don't know what state you are in but where I live we can only work in doctors offices. I know it stinks that you won't be able to really use your degree but you could atleast work all summer and save money because it will come in handy!

Thanks everyone for the advice but I think that I can work around it I actually talked to admissions at my school and they informed to go ahead and start Notre Dame College in the fall of 2014 because if need be they can help work around my schedule so that I can go to school and work!!!!!!
