Med used for a bleedout

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Published

I used to work labor/delivery. While discussing labor with a friend we come upon bleed outs after delivery. We cannot think of the IV med that is used as a quick/ temp fix. Can anyone please help.

Maybe you are thinking of methergine (usually given IM)? Hemabate is NEVER given IV: only IM.

you are either on a cutting edge, imenid or our OBs and we are practicing in a stone age.

some of the things you do like IV methergine, I have never, ever heard of.

but hey that is what i like about these boards....

there is always something new to learn...

I think it's a case of us being back in the dark ages. Some of the older nurses I work with told me they remember doc's asking for iv methergine pushed straight into the vein, forget the iv and dilution! I wish we would go for the cytotec. I've already got too much grey hair for a 38 year old! Incidentally, in the ALSO course I was talking about in another thread, they state Iv methergine is contra-indicated! Don't ya love consistency in medical practice.

Oh, I've experienced this lovely drug. :o

Had a cesarean two years ago after 3 normal vag deliveries previously. In post-op, where I couldn't move a thing below my waist, my family came in to visit as they had rushed my baby off to NICU. After awhile I noticed a smell . . . . it made me think of that sewer gas smell you get when you've just begun to empty your bathtub of water and a smell comes up from the sink. The nurse was so nice . . "yes, I think they are working on the plumbing dear." My family left and she gently told me I had been incontinent. Oh I have such empathy now for people who cannot move but need to be cleaned.

We use Pitocin IM if we had a normal deliver with no IV access and then gave give it IV if needed. We have used Methergine and have Hemabate and Cytotec but I've never used them.
