med/surg

Published

I need advice too. I am currently in a nursing program and really want to get a job in med/surg. Any suggestions on how to get a job in this area directly out of school? I was a vet tech for years and participated in surgeries. I love it. Any wisdom would be appreciated!

Most Med Surg floors I know hire new grads, you should have no problem at all!!

During your M/S clinicals make sure you thank the nursing Mgr and let her know how much you have enjoyed learning on her floor and ask her policy on hiring new grads. If your lucky you may end up with a job offer before graduation..

Good Luck and congrats

Just to clarify--you do know Med Surg nurses do not actually work in the surgery--you take care of generalized patients some of whom are pre or post surgical.

I just graduated at the end of August and got a job on med-surg floor before I graduated. Stay busy on the floor, show initiative and ask your nurse often if there is anything you can do. Many nursing students study during clinicals but I recommend to dedicate your clinical time to clinical and they will surely notice. Good luck!!

I think you're thinking of OR, not med-surg.

No I'm thinking med-surg a new graduate is not going to get a job in the OR

We hire new grads all the time in OR, the only diff is new grads get a much longer orientation time than an exsisiting nurse.

I graduated with a lady who got a job in Cardiothorasic surgery 1st week out of school. She had a 6month orientation. 3 mos general surgery then 3 months heart.

I guess different places have different needs. At my hospital as a new LVN you cannot go to the OR, ICU, or ER.
