Med-Surg Roll Call

Specialties Med-Surg

Hi all ... thought it was about time to have a Med-Surg roll call .... please repond by telling us if you work in med-surg .... how long you have been there and if you plan on staying in med surg .... also, please let us know if you hold certification in med-surg through ANCC or AMSN. Thanks ....

I will start ....

I am a nurse manager for a 40 bed med-surg unit. Love med-surg, but am challenged daily by how busy the unit is and how sick our patient population is. I plan on remaining in med-surg for a number of years (at least until I finish my Masters degree and start teaching). I am not currently certified, but am planning on taking the test in October throught AMSN.

I think the thing I LOVE the most about M/S is the diversity of patients we see. You really need to be a nursing generalist to be successful in med-surg.

Does anyone here know what a "nurse practice committee" does? i am on the nurse practice committee at my hospital. we are just starting shared governance. nurses making decsions for nurses based on evidence based practices. still learning the ins and outs. we have only had 2 meetings so far.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post; I have been "assigned" to our committee, and am just wondering what, if anything, I need to know. I guess I'll find out when I get there!

we call ours a clinical practice council. it is a way to include the clinical staff in some of the administrative decisions that affect the hospital and staff and always affect your patients. ours has 9 separate commitees that address different issues for example...policies and procedures, customer service, research, code blue. they all address important issues that affect staff and patients therefore they place clinical staff as well administrative staff all on the council and decisions are made based on shared governance. we have had ours in place since jan of this year. we meet once a month and have had some real changes happen which affect everyone. i think if your facility has started this then they really care about the staff and the patients.

Hello! I'm a new paper RN starting out on MEDSURG on Monday a little earlier than my orientation group. Starting to get nervous especially after reading many of the posts in the MEDSURG forum. It helps to know that many of the negative thoughts and feelings are common and almost universally shared. That's the great thing about this group, universality. I'm sure I won't feel this way when it happens to me! Have met my manager and preceptor. They seem nice and welcoming... Not much else to say since it has been expressed in some shape or form already... Wish me luck!

New nurse here, began training on med-surg floor in July. I don't know if I will stay in this area ,but right now I am just taking it one day at a time.

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, educator.

I have worked in M/S as a nurse for a year and as a cna for 2 yrs prior and I actually love it! The only other area of nursing that I would ever consider would be geriatric/ltc. At this time, I don't have any certifications, but hospital I work at would like it if I did......Just trying to get a little more education under my belt before doing any certs!

What is a new paper RN?

I work on the med-surg floor as a House Supervisor. This means I deal will with all areas of the hospital when needed, but my main concentration is the Med-Surg floor. I started 12years ago as an LPN on med-surg then after a year I moved to the emergency room. I stayed there for 10years and loved every minute of it. I learned to be stronger, wiser and a lot quicker. When I received my RN I returned back to the Med-Surg floor with all the knowledge and experience I received in the emergency room. I feel that it has made a difference. I work 12 hour shifts on nights and as everyone knows you don't have all the luxuries that day shift is afforded, so you have to be on your toes and I have instilled this into my nurses to become more agressive and observant as to what is going on with there patient. I love med surg and my job because you can get to know your patients and family members. I teach my patients and their family members to speak out and ask questions. It makes a big difference. Like any department you work at you have the good, the bad and the ugly. Isnt that the same anywhere though and what a great satisfaction when you get just a simple smile and a thank you.:wink2:

i've worked on a med-surg unit for 6 years.i enjoy it d/t the diversity of patients we get. i started out as a student nurse and was invited to continue to work there after graduation. as a new grad, my transition from student to rn was easy because of the wonderful nurses and other staff i have worked with. i was able to hone my skills and build my routine, my way of doing things.the patient load is usually 6:1. the pace is fast (i work day shift) and time goes quickly. and the appreciation expressed by my patients when they are discharged makes me not in a hurry to go to another dept.:thankya:

I work in med surg as a CNA,and I enjoy the work, but sometimes it is too fast paced for me.I have good days when I feel I did really good, but other days I feel like I could have done better, but as I said,it's so fast paced, how can you possibly accomplish everything you want to?I had an RN say to me one day that I wasn't "consistant" enough....and that made me feel really good:( .I was thinking about going for my LVN,but if I'm not that great as a CNA,I don't know what I'm going to do:uhoh21: .

I work on a med surg floor that specializes in heart failure and stroke patients. Some are on telemetry. I have worked there for two years, it is where i started as a Graduate nurse. I am transferring to the OR though in february. I like med surg, but want to explore what else is out there. The one part I don't like so much is dealing with the crazy families that are out there. They can really make your job much harder than it has to be. I am not certified in med surg but plan to get certified in the OR if everthing works out there.
