No clue. Ambien has a controlled release formula called Ambien CR, but nothing MR. Also, if it stood for "modified release" as suggested it's in the WRONG place in the order and what would "x1" mean??
I've never seen that abbreviation in a medication order.

It might stand for may repeat x 1.

I do believe you're right.....although I've never seen it used before.

Just goes to show orders need to be clearly written AND understood to avoid confusion :)
In all my years as an RN "MR x 1" was commonly used on medication orders, especially with one time and prn sleepers.
the others maybe right, i am not a rn yet so as stated before good reason why orders should be clear. truern has a point but here is where i got my info and quote :)
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2656288
"in an effort to expand the coverage of sleep complaints and overcome the lack of efficacy in sleep maintenance, the manufacturer (sanofi-aventis) developed a modified-release (mr) formulation of zolpidem tartrate that was approved for use in the us in 2005. the coated, two-layer, zolpidem mr tablet is a biphasic release dosage form (ambien cr prescribing information 2007). the first layer immediately releases drug while the second layer is controlled-release. the tablet was designed to mimic initial dosing while the extended-release of drug maintains a plasma concentration for a longer duration of time than the immediate-release product (weinling et al 2006)."
if this question about the meaning of the mr in ambien 5 mg po hs prn sleep mr x1 is posted on the general nursing discussion forum where experienced rns read and respond, i think i am pretty sure that you will get the same overwhelming response that i gave. please try posting the question there.
