Med Pass 3-11 shift

Published

New grad 3-11 shift in long term care. How is the med pass? How many med passes are there?

Specializes in LPN.

Mangment cares and night shift in the same sentence?

I think 11-7 is hard because I need sleep. Some people I know love it. In my facility, ther's only 1 med pass for two halls. The nurse only gives maybe 5 mrds and gets fingersticks and coverage to those who need it. Treatments aren't done unless necessary, It is kept as low maintenance as possible so the residents can sleep. The ones who are awake stay near the nurses station, The nurse has charting and gets paperwork ready for dayshift, and gets blood draws requests ready for the phlebotomist. I like sleep too much. If you have no trouble sleeping during the day it may work for you.

Along with the evening med pass you will have treatments as well. Don't forget about the diabetics as many have sliding scale orders.

The 8 and 9 pass can be heavy depending on the population and then you have the PRNs that come along with evening shift.

My opinion on 11 to 7 is that it's the easiest shift around. I see from prior posts that some don't agree with me but that's my take on it.

Noc shift is usually made to do the monthly MAR turnover and other neccessary paperwork duties that can be done at night where there's more down time then other shifts.

as a new grad i def would stay away from the 11-7 shift. i would not want to be the only nurse responsible for that many residents with no experience.

i need sleep to but i rarely get it. 11-7 def would put my sleep cycle out of whack.

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Sorry was speaking from personal experience. I was the ADON and yes I cared and I came in early routinely to see the 11-7 nurse and yes she had permission to call me not the Director, me if she needed me.. And one night she did.. the CNA's all told her they did not know how to use a hoyer lift..Yeah right?? I told her to inform them there would be an in-service at in 30 mins at 3 am.. and yes I went in did the in-service, signed each CNA off.

So please do not always assume that the minute someone goes into management that they do not care.. Granted it may be a low figure but at least one nurse did...ME.
