You sound like a great nurse. The majority of my classmates wanted to work in ER, ICU or Mother/Baby. I was one of a few who wanted to work in Geriatrics or Psych. Maybe someday I will work in a hospital setting but I really don't see that happening. I enjoy working with the elderly and I would have it no other way. I don't know why people come down so hard on LTC. We work hard and take good care of our residents. To each their own. Also, congrats on obtaining your BSN, I hope to go back to school next year to obtain mine.

They mostly get angry if the admit arrives before 10pm. They feel if the admit arrived before 10pm how come you did not complete it. I have had admits arrive at 5pm, one of the worst times. It disrupts my med pass and families are constantly asking questions. With the admission and family interruptions I may not finish my med pass until around 6:30 (cross my fingers, If I'm lucky). Then I finally get a chance to call the MD and verify meds. Before long it's time for the 9p accuchecks. I am a hrad worker and always go above and beyond. I do the best I can but will have to be more firm and let the next shift handle some of it.

Thanks, I will be looking into this matter with the labor board. From now on when I get a late admission I will do the assessment and verify the meds, and will endorse whatever I did not complete to the next on coming shift. It's just the first thing they ask you is what time did the admit come. They don't want to do the admission and get angry with you if you leave them anything.

Hi, fellow nurses. I am a RN, I have roughly 4 months of experience at my first nursing job in long term care. I work 3-11 shift and I have to vent. I get a lot of admissions on this shift and I always stay and complete them. The problem is my facility does not pay overtime. Meaning I have stayed 1-3 hours after work completing an admission. At my facility if a new admission comes before 10pm it is my responsibility, not the next shift. I end up staying so late because not only do I have to finish the admission but I also have to do Medicare Charting, Quarterly MDS Assesement if any, chart on falls and any other pertinent circumstances. I am trying to get my one year experience and rough it out another 8 months, but I feel drained. Then on top of that the DON is chewing me out about a shower room the CNAs left dirty. I always go behind their work but that one day I remember I had two falls and forgot.

Yes, each resident name is listed on the medication (bingo card). At my facility we must have a doctor's order for a narcotic and a written consent from the resident.

Hi, new grad here. The ltc (long term care) facility where I am employed as a RN, I feel rushed during the narcotic count. I thought when counting you say the name of the resident, the name of the drug (medication), and how much is remaining. I already had two nurses yell at me about doing this. They want me to only say the number of medication remaining.

I will stick with 3-11 shift full-time, I will gain experience and don't have to worry about having another job to concentrate on.

What shift would you work in ltc (long term care) 7-3 or 3-11? By the way I have no kids. I heard ltc is very demanding, would you work full or part-time? 12 hour shifts are not available. Would you work work part-time and get another part-time job not in nursing to change things up a little. I have a non-nursing B.A. degree so I could get a decent paying part-time job. I just need my one year of experience. My aunt said working full-time as a nurse will burn me out or should I stick it out full time for a year?

abbyann as a new grad i def would stay away from the 11-7 shift. i would not want to be the only nurse responsible for that many residents with no experience. anjule18 i need sleep to but i rarely get it. 11-7 def would put my sleep cycle out of whack.
