MDE Columbia University 2021

Published

Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

Thankfully I did not have to do so, but it is not uncommon for people to commit to more than one school, and pull out when they decide to do so. The only thing you lose is your deposit.

To all the folks already admitted to, or still anxiously awaiting a decision from, CUSON, I have a question: Did anyone have to make a commitment to any other nursing school (besides those admitted to CUSON in the "first round") by the 29th? In my case, as much as I would have appreciated getting into the program in the "first round," I was happy that I didn't have to make that decision before I heard from other schools. And as I wait for CUSON's decision, I'm wondering if any other nursing school has organized admissions in "rounds," effectively creating an early decision-like admissions process, but without informing applicants (in advance of submitting their applications) that they would be "sorted" this way?

There's a worry in the back of my mind that if other nursing programs didn't organize their admissions process the same way as CUSON that (1) students accepted in the first round were pressured to put down a deposit to secure their spot, all the while hoping to get into a different program; (2) that organizing their admissions process into two "rounds" creates an unnecessary and inaccurate perception that students admitted in the "second round" aren't as qualified as those accepted in the "first round"; and (3) that CUSON has potentially engaged in early-decision-like admissions practices that foreclose acceptances to other nursing programs.

No other school I applied to organized their admissions process into "rounds" or required a deposit before the entire (rounds 1+2) admissions process was finalized. So I'm just curious what other applicants' admissions processes have been like, and whether what CUSON has done this year is mirrored in other nursing schools' admissions practices.

Best of luck to everyone!

Well said. I’ve mostly thought about your #2 point. I know it’s been shared on here that placing a deposit and risking losing it would be financially strenuous for some applicants which is very fair. My greatest qualm with the “rounds” situation is how inaccurately it was explained and executed. It’ll be a relief to hear back - certainly hoping next week - after all this since October.

Thank you Rouge_bbase and dnpmaybe for your responses.

To Rouge_bbase: Many applicants can't afford to "lose their deposit," so they see their deposit as a final commitment to a particular school. But perhaps the practice of making deposits, and subsequently canceling them after the 29th, (say, over the past two weeks as applicants got into preferred schools) can partially explain why CUSON has been delayed releasing its final admissions decisions?

Again, I would really like to know what admissions practices applicants have experienced at other schools and whether CUSON's admissions policies this year are similar or different from other schools'.

Cheers!

Your point (2) is how I have been feeling. But I am probably wrong and it could be entirely random since they had about 950 applications this year. They had us thinking that we would hear back waaay sooner when they said they will be releasing decisions in rounds. They were probably overwhelmed with the applications and needed more time. But I wish they didn't even say anything in the first place so we wouldn't get our hopes up. I know they want to try and give as many applicants as they can a chance. So they gave a short amount of time to put down a deposit so they get an idea of who is going to commit to CUSON and who will be declining the offer which makes room for more acceptances in the second rounds. Im not sure if other schools have done the same thing. However, CUSON is only a once a year cohort. So they don't have a Fall start or Winter start. I guess this is why they are doing what they are doing this year to try and give many applicants a chance, even though it is a bit disorganized.

I got into another school and they have been very transparent. We’ve had current students call us to ask if we wanted to know anymore info, we’ve had open houses and even admitted student day! I was accepted in October and do not have to accept my offer until March 1st.

Columbia announced the rounds and made it seem like we would have decisions earlier than last year when they could have just announced one deadline or none at all. They have not been transparent about what’s going on besides the two emails we had.

I agree. I thought we honestly were going to get a round of decisions in December ? because thats how they made it seem. But they got ahead of themselves and were overwhelmed. They shouldn’t have said anything at all honestly because im sure now, they have hundreds of people emailing them about decisions.

I emailed administration on Friday and they emailed me back today surprisingly! I didn’t think they would respond to emails on weekends? Anyway, they said to look out for an email tomorrow or by Wednesday for decisions!

haha thanks for the update!

Although let's remember that administration's word means nothing at this point.

My thoughts exactly ?

CUSON promised decisions by the middle of the month. Tomorrow is a federal holiday, although Columbia is holding classes. But if administrative offices are closed on Monday, the decisions will be released on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It is strange that ladybug1 would get a response on a Sunday and that admissions would give that information to just one applicant, but I guess that's just how this process works...

Thanks to ladybug1 for the effort and for sharing the admissions' office response!

Best of luck to everyone!

Tbh this is really depressing. It is more depressing than getting a straight rejection from them. Although it looks like 2nd round has equal or just slightly lower chance of getting into Columbia, truth be said it is kinda like an alternative waiting list. I wish they can be more truthful about this situation, instead of feeding us popcorn when the fun is probably already over. Sorry for the negativity, its just that I feel dumb for still feeling hopeful about this whole situation.

Im right there with you because I feel the exact same way. I feel like second rounds does have a lower chance of getting into CU. But at the same time I’m hoping that they are making it very fair on their side. But it does feel like a wait list. It sucks ugh.
