MDC Nursing Fall 2017

Published

Hi everyone! I just wanted to start a thread for applicants of the nursing program at Miami Dade College for Fall term 2017. I'm currently working on my last prerequisites and will be finished this semester. I plan on taking the HESI A2 in January and applying for the Generic and Part time tracks.

Hey guys!

I started Dade's nursing program in the Spring and was lucky enough to pass my first semester with all As and a B ( boy do I have tips for when you guys get accepted! )

From what I understand, during spring those who had a cumulative score (0.60 from hesi, 0.40 from gpa) of 82% and higher were all accepted, though it may be more competitive for fall because there are more applicants. Check last year's thread, that should give you a pretty good idea of what you need to get if you're worried.

For anyone accepted for Summer semester (starting tomorrow), a few words:

You've already gone through orientation, and im sure your professors and staff have told you all about the million things you have to buy during the semester. Like I did, you're probably wondering what you can and can't get away without buying, because let's face it, none of us are rich here!

You'll need scrubs. You can buy the green pants anywhere, but teachers are very picky about the shirt; shirts must have the MDC logo on it or you'll get called out and even asked to leave RT. Buying the label separately and having it sewn on another green shirt is actually just about as expensive, so save yourself the trouble and buy the shirt. Same principle for the lab coat, which you kinda need (some teachers want you to wear it, but no one enforced that)

Don't buy the lab bag you'll need for lab until after the first couple weeks of lab! Many people in my class bought the bags only to find late in the semester that our school had ordered the wrong ones and ended up only using like one thing from it. lucky for me, I never bought it and kept the 100 bucks.

Don't buy a fancy stethoscope, one of the cheap 15 dollar stethoscopes from the store will do the job just fine, you can buy the 130 dollar litman steth when you're a real nurse making money.

And lastly, books. Sadly, yes, you do have to buy them. Not only because teachers want to see you with them, but because PowerPoints are literally just a tiny skim of chapters. In the case of adult health assessment, 90% of what you'll be tested on is never covered in class, it's in the book.

For Adult health assessment you'll need:

Jarvis, "physical examination and health assessment 7th edition."

For Fundamentals, you'll need: Potter and Perry, "Fundamentals of Nursing 9th edition"

For lab you'll need Potter and Perry, "Nursing Interventions and Clinical Skills Edition 6"

For Pharmacy math, you'll need: Olsen, "Medical Dosage Calculations: a dimensional analysis approach" 11th edition.

That's IT. Don't let teachers or bookstore confuse you into thinking you need more than that. Any additional books in your syllabus for each class are in fact part of an APP called Ucentral which is given for free to all students. Those are the only four books you actually need.

If you RENT rom the store it'll run you about $350/400 for everything. If you find em online individually, at least $250 without shipping.

If you buy them off me (near new), Ill sell for the low low price of $200, which I promise you won't find anywhere else.

Feel free to hit me up with questions about the program or inquiries about my books at 3057478327.

Good luck guys!

how do we calculate the percentage of hesi & gpa

For anyone accepted for Summer semester (starting tomorrow), a few words:

Will they send out acceptance letters in May?

When was the deadline for summer ?

Absolutely not. She is extremely helpful and corny. She goes beyond to teach and guides you every step of the way.

Is there any way that I can directly message you to ask you some questions?

how do we calculate the percentage of hesi & gpa

Multiply your Hesi score by 0.6 and multiply your your SCIENCE gpa by 10, and add them to get your cumulative score.

It doesn't let me DM here but my email is [email protected]

So the college algebra etc doesn't count?

only science classes count towards your gpa

So the college algebra etc doesn't count?

No, only the following classes count towards science gpa: A&P 1 & lab, A&P 2 & lab, Chem & lab, Micro (lecture only)

Will they send out acceptance letters in May?

I can't wait to start seeing those exciting post with the acceptance letters rolling in one by one.

I'm so nervous my scores aren't the best
