Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?
I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!
I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol
Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat
The way I understand it, it totally depends on everyone's scores (like a class graded on a curve). There is the minimum cutoff (something like 58?), but after that it could be anything. If they are selecting 100, 125, or 150 people, then the score of that last person is the cutoff. That's why I wish we could see the whole list. If the 150th ranked score is 87.8 and mine is 87.6, then I would be rejected. This all assumes they are using that 60/40 (TEAS/GPA) calculation method without any other factors.The advantage we have is that the TEAS is still so new that I think it keeps the scores down somewhat. Look at how hard it is to get actual TEAS questions and examples. I took the MDC prep courses and a couple of teachers didn't even have the ATI book and were just giving general test prep. In comparison, with long established tests like SAT, ACT, etc there are tons of materials out there from years of harvesting the actual tests. So in a sense we are lucky because the TEAS scores will probably only go up as time goes on.
I understand that.
I was really trying to get everyone to "fill in the blank" with their opinion of that cut-off score you're referring to.

As I understand it (and of course don't take this as absolute) :
- There IS a fulltime generic program in the spring;
- You MUST take the TEAS to apply;
- You can apply without your pre-reqs being done as long as you finish them by the application deadline, which for the fall program is May 1
You can definitely find the breakdown of the program classes on the MDC nursing website...
Keep checking back, lots of good info here!
Hello all! So when I filled out the application for MDC is asks if you have any certifications in the healthcare field. I am a medical assistant so I put that in the application. Do you guys think they also take that into consideration when accepting the applicants?? History in healthcare better chances of getting in over someone who has no experience??
Hi guys! question, I took A&P 1 w/ lab alreadyand im taking the second part in the summer semester, however I wanted to know if any of you took Chem and MicroB in the same semester? is that even allowed? Im currently registered for Chem and MicroB along with my A&P 2, I know its too much for one semester so I wanna take chem and Micro in the fall since that would be my last semester but i saw it said that chem is a pre req for Micro so im scared if i drop them i wont be able to take both in the fall. I asked an advisor and she kcouldnt give me a clear answer.

Well since you're cramming it all together, you've got a LOT of intense studying to do. I don't think you'll have an issue taking all those classes together if the system already let you register.
That being said, why not knock out AP2 and Chem this summer, and save Micro for the fall? That way you can also take the Micro Lab (even though it's not officially a pre-req) and have a less stressful time. Now, something to consider also: I believe the deadline to apply for the Spring program is September 1st; I would ask an advisor if you need to have all classes completed by this time, because if that's the case they won't accept your application; you'll need to complete everything this summer in order to meet that deadline.
Which advisor did you meet with? Go talk to Dawn or Jennifer, they have both been fantastic to deal over the time I've been doing my pre-reqs, and I would imagine they'd be able to answer all your questions.

Really there is no perfect answer to this question...personally I think what I would do would be to take A and P 2 with lab over the summer and then Chem and Micro in the fall with there labs when you will have more weeks to learn the material in. No matter what, you are going to have a lot of studying to do whenever you do two science classes together but especially if those are the only classes you are doing you should be fine...I would be reluctant to take two sciences in a mini-term though...not because you won't be able to get an A but I do not think it commits the information to your longterm memory as well when you rush the classes in miniterms...You really need to know your Chem for the TEAS...

That is a very good question...unfortunantly I do not know the answer...but I did put down on my application that I am a CNA =)
On Eagles- thank you so much for all of the information! I just had a TB test done in January, which is a little frustrating because I'll still need two more since the one I had will not count as 'recent.' Oh well, lots of vaccines! Does any one know if we have to have live vaccines?
I was also wondering if we have a certification in CPR that is higher than the one required if we'll have to go back and get the lesser CPR certification? I have one through the American Red Cross (ARC) for professional rescuers. It would make sense that I would be fine with what I have, but my experience has shown that what makes sense to me doesn't always make sense to the school. On a side note, you can 'test out' of taking the CPR class through the ARC, but they are pretty strict on knowing any updated information before taking the test.
I am also not taking any classes until I (hope) start one of MDC's nursing programs in August, and am working full time to try to avoid any more student loans. I wouldn't mind looking over at least one class's book(s) in preparation though. Does any one know where or if I can find information regarding the required books for the first semester?
Thank you so much! Everyone has been exceptionally helpful
Hey if you google "Miami Dade College Fundamentals of Nursing syllabus" The first two things that come up are the Nursing pharm and Fundamentals of Nursing syllubi ...when I click on them to download the file it doesn't let you view them...but if you click on the quick view option they will open up in google documents. =) Keep in mind these are old and I think one of them is from homestead campus but it is still good to get an idea of what is coming up and the textbooks the previous semesters used. =) Also on the Nursing webpage you can see the clinical checkoff forms they use.
