Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?
I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!
I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol
Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat
...So future nurses, please let me know what you think, any guidance in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I would like some input on my options and any other choices that I didn't mention. Thanks for all your helpI say you're on the right track, you should apply to as many programs as possible--including MDC again for the Spring. I got accepted this time around but I had also I applied to a few other Nursing programs because I wanted to have a back up plan. Dont be discouraged if you don't get accepted to your first choice. At first, I was crushed when I wasnt accepted to FIU last year but I got over it. The admissions process is really competitive with all these schools.
I started the Nursing program at Broward College last Fall. I don't know that they're easier to get in- admissions is based on the prereq GPA and HESI scores-but I will say that I thought the HESI was easier than the TEAS. I heard that BC really focuses on the Anatomy and Physiology portion of the HESI, so I would brush up on that before taking the test. If you still need to take it, the Core class is also offered online at Broward Tech schools and BC accepts it.
As far as Keiser is concerned, it is a good school. I got my Accounting degree there, and I have girlfriend who did the RN program. I was also accepted in their nursing program, but the tuition is just too high for me since I'm already in serious student loan debt from my first attendance there. But in your case it my be worth it, they also use TEAS for admission and you have a pretty good score.
Also, if you need financial assistance for school you should look into the WIA program at Workforce One. They pay for tuition, books and uniforms, childcare, and give gas cards or bus passes so you can get to school. They'll also pay for the NCLEX after graduation and help with job placement. They will help if you go to MDC or BC, but not Keiser.
With a 3.22 GPA and a TEAS score of 80 I have been rejected, I kind of saw it coming but didn't want to give up hope. I have already started planning for applying next semester. I want to retake my TEAS test (study a bit harder of course. Do you think scoring a low 90 would greatly improve my chances?) and apply for 2012. I also wanted to apply to Broward college because I've heard it's a lot easier to get in (I would just have to take an additional prerequisite). Another option I had in mind was applying to Keiser University. I see that they are accredited and legit. The only thing that scares me is the price tag $35,000 is A LOT of money. I also want to apply for FASFA to help me pay for school. Finally, I can apply for it because I'm considered independent and lost my job of 3 years about a month ago =( but that's another story. Sorry for the long post, i just have a ton of things going through my head. So future nurses, please let me know what you think, any guidance in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I would like some input on my options and any other choices that I didn't mention. Thanks for all your helpOh WOW!!! With your TEAS score I could almost swear that you are getting in (mine was TEAS 70 and GPA 3.0), but well, remember that this is not the end of the world, you will be able to get into another nursing school soon ( that includes me because I wasn't accepted as well LOL). I was also thinking about Keiser, but their tuition also scared me, but if I don't find nothing else I will end up going there. Well let's continue our journey towards nursing school LOL!!! If you find out about anything please let me know!!!! And GOOD LUCK!!!

You have a good mind set Fcat :) and i too just received my rejection letter. But just like you at this point, i expected it. If you don't mind me asking, what was your gpa and teas score?hopefully next time around we get picked! Good luck :)
Hopefully next time we get picked LOL:clown:!!!! My GPA 3.0 and my TEAS 70.
Hello Everyone,
What I am going to ask now has nothing to do with MDC nursing school, well it kind of does
I am going to start studying for the TEAS again, and try to correct the mistakes that I made, and my main concern is english. I have trouble with paragraph/passage comprehension and also grammar, does anyone know of any book or website that can help me improve my TEAS score?
Thank you very much in advance!!!!

All this information has been greatly helpful. I've been doing nothing but studying my Kaplan "Nursing School Entrance Exams" book (the life science review section). Looking for a job on the side, but a job is some what hard to come by. Planning on taking the TEAS test in 2 to 3 weeks, and making an appointment to speak to a Broward College advisor in the process to see what i need to do to apply there. Good luck to everyone applying to the program in 2012 I hope to see you guys there =)
Does anyone know which is the most important accreditation for an RN program? When I was previously pursuing surgical tech I looked at CAAHEP. But I think they only accredit "allied" health programs (which doesn't include RN?). Then I looked at AACN and don't see MDC's BSN program listed (but even Keiser is on there). I do see the ARN program on NLNAC. Just confused as to what all this might mean.
PursuitofHappyness,
Your TEAS score & GPA should get you in at MDC. It is my understanding that this semester was especially difficult to get into because of MDC Spring part-time program cancellation.
Yes, I have info on Broward College. In Jan 2010, I started asking 2nd & 3rd semester RN school students at BCC what they thought of the program. Many I met/asked said, "almost anyone can get accepted, but only 16% graduate". Personally know a student who has MBA degree who "pooh-poohed" me when I shared this info with him. Yet recently he emailed me and said "everything I had heard is true". His 2nd semester he had to withdraw and do a refresher course for critical thinking and something else. Personally, I'd try many other options before trying the BCC.edu route. I have personally seen students who failed BCC apply to MDC. I think MDC is harder to get accepted to. I don't think MDC is an easier program. I do think MDC makes an effort to provide tools & options to help a student succeed. Yet I still have yet to hear of their acceptance rate vs graduate-from-MDC ratio!! MDC said they had a 85%+ NCLEX pass rate recently.
I'd try to leave the Keiser & Keiser type universities lower on my list of options. You already know about the expensive tuition issue. You may want to ask their NCLEX graduation rates before you commit to that option. You might want to ask about the ability to transfer credits to a State college or State university (in the event you want to continue to a BSN degree).
You may want to consider the LPN, then LPN-RN option. Once you have your pre-req classes and are an LPN, you can apply to both the "generic RN program" AND the "LPN-RN program". Doubles your odds of being accepted. Anyone that has a reason not to do this... please chime in. It seems to me to be a good strategy for those not accepted the first try. It was my back-up plan if I had not been accepted this semester.
FCAT,
Yes, if you intend to retake the TEAS.... it is my opinion the best choice is this:
Go to atitesting.com (the company that provides the TEAS entry exam & subsequent tests at MDC). Pay the $100 for the preparation book and most importantly the online practice tests "A" & "B".
Why study from preparation books found at the average bookstore that are not even associated with the ATI testing company? Are they really a good source?!
GOOD LUCK.

I agree so strongly with this. I bought ACT prep books and took all 3 of the MDC TEAS prep courses and none of that material was even 1/10 as valuable as what was in the TEAS book and online practice. If I had it over to do again, I would focus only on the prep materials that come directly from ATI.
I'm sure the prep classes offered through MDC will improve over time. But because the TEAS is so new, when I took the classes, the instructors didn't even seem to know much about the actual test. Consequently the material they covered was not all relevant.
Zaptastic

The only other info I know is that while I was at Keiser, several of the students were transferring to Nova and said it a great program too (I think they said it was easy to get into because you didn't have to provide references or something).
