MDC Fall 2011 - PART TIME Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

So far it appears like I've only been accepted into the part-time RN program at MDC.edu (Miami Dade College) for August 2011 (Fall 2011).

There is another LONG thread for MDC Fall 2011, but it isn't specific to the part-time program. I'm not sure if other students who have been accepted to the part-time program will start collaborating, but if they do, this might be one good place to start!

Sincerely,

Fem

P.S. Well, it has taken me 3 (three) tries to create a new discussion thread. I'm hoping this is in the proper place & location. I'm hoping I get some students post here. Collaboration is a wonderful thing.

Hello "fem" (God knows what your name is :D) and thank you for replying in such short time. To answer your question, I was accepted in the generic part-time program for RN. And yes, although it says four years of experience on my profile, it doesn't mean as 'experience' on like working as a CNA or LPN. No, I mean four years of experience working at a hospital. I've only been in college almost two years. Three if you count one where I wasn't unable to attend due to moneys, you know? Add like six more months after being in nursing school at this horrible-60 grand for nursing-private-accept-anybody Dade Medical College garbage of school. Excuse my language. I'm a proud MDC member since 2007 and still going strong ; )

As your line says, you've been accepted to the part-time generic!!! Congrats fem! I'll be honored to meet you on July the 21st. We'll do it together. For two and a half years we'll be stuck with one another. hardly lol

To Picadelli. Excuse me, mocadell74. What can I say. I'm funny as _____. Hell, that is. Anyway, I got accepted to the generic part-time. I hope you did as well 'cause you're about to embark in the ride of a lifetime with me. If not, ask my former and current classmates and now friends. Poor them, they can barely handle the full time.

I received my letter on June the 29th almost when I was giving up on myself. And then there it was. So I've been drinking ever since. That's right! Sprite and Gatorade G2.

Holler back, "mocci." That sounds better. :monkeydance:

JCabrera aka Juan,

Many people don't like to put their first names on here... they like any bit

of privacy they can find. On internet, I'm more interested in INFORMATION to help me survive RN school. I'm sure I will get to know personal names during school.

So, I could tell you my name is Fanny E.M. (F.E.M.) but who wants to be called Fanny? LOL.

I will wear a white ribbon in my hair the day of orientation to help you find me. Please don't look for my Fanny. LOL.

Any particular features or color of shirts I should look for to help me ID you? Or are you going to wear a badge with your name on it? You might be easier to "pick out of the crowd", I'm thinking their will be more women than men. And with a name like Juan, you might have some Hispanic distinguishing features. I won't ask the tall, blonde guy if his name is Juan. Or maybe I will?! LOL.

Congrats on being accepted!!!

I must admit though I am surprised about your gpa and teas score and you receiving a letter(I am thrilled for you because it's a great feeling of accomplishment). It surprises me more because I know people, including myself that had higher gpa's and teas score and haven't heard back yet. It makes me nervous like "did they send it to the wrong email or misplaced applications" etc you know how the mind messes with you in times like these.

I wish you the best and hope to continue to hear about your nursing journey and experiences!

Look up for the guy nominated for "Best Dressed."

Believe me, you'll notice me. Oh! And I will be on the lookout for that white ribbon on your hair!

We'll do it together F_____ whatever... FEM

Hi Fem, it states that the drug test results must be sealed. However the paper our physician must sign asks him to indicate if they're positive or negative (which would mean he'd have to open it). What did you do?

Also, the CPR class I signed up for has a notation at the bottom stating we buy and bring the book to class. What book is it and where do I buy it?

Thanks!

NRSGRL -

My recommendation is this... pay for 1 test, get 2 sealed results + 1 unsealed results. 1 for your Dr., 1 for RN school, 1 unsealed for you.

Explain this to whomever is doing your drug test (before paying them & doing it). Maybe they charge you $5 for extra paperwork?

My friend referred me to a place that is accustomed to doing titers, immunizations, drug tests, etc for hospitals & employers. Their prices were fairly ok. $40 for drug test. I go back Fri for my 2nd trip (to view the results of 1st TB "prick" on the arm). I did my drug test there.... and believe I have made myself clear that RN school needs a sealed envelope for this and I want a copy as well, because I do not like having someone know more about my body or health than me. Not that I expect any issues... but I guess it is possible for errors at the lab or false positives?! Maybe I will have my drug test results back tomorrow?! I'm expecting everything to go smoothly.

I also did my mumps titer & varicella (chick pox) titers.

I also learned more about the Hepatitis B vaccine. It is optional... but most of my educated friends are opting for it. One of my friends suggested I do the TDP (TDaP?) Tetorifice-Diptheria-Pertussis (WhoopingCough), too. Even though it isn't on the list... we will likely be dealing with enough lower-income patients & foreigners (not exposed to USA's vaccines & healthcare) that it can't hurt to have the protection.

It is suspected that I'm a bit older than you... it was surprising that the receptionist (who was fairly smart about the process) said she was shocked if I had never had a Hepatitis B vaccine. She believed that most Universities required it.). However, I was re-admitted to FAU a year ago and all they required was the measles & rubella titers. (not mumps, not varicella=chick pox, nor Heptatis titers or vaccines). Best thing I can figure is that most mature "patients" the receptionist sees has already had the Hepatitis B vaccine.

BOOK FOR CPR CLASS:

I didn't take the class at MDC, so I'm not sure where to get the book. Bookstore? You might look on the "MDC Fall 2011 (full tiime)" thread... maybe someone knows there?

STAY IN TOUCH

fem

Thanks for getting back to me Fem. Unfortunately, I already did everything with my PCP and I did my drug test with Econolabs and recieved the results in one envelope. I will call the school to figure out what they want me to do. Of course, I always get a different answer! I find very little consistency there. I called the school and the CPR book (for anyone else reading this thread) can be purchased at the MEdical Center Campus book store for around $25. Thanks for the recomendation for the TDP. I will likely get it as I have 2 small children and an infant at home. Don't want to be bringing any of that into the house! Two weeks until orientation :yeah:

NRSGRL,

Can't you contact Econolabs and request a 2nd copy that is sealed? Certainly they retain records for at least 1 year. Just an idea.

And I agree... very little consistency about answers from MDC. But I've found that typical for any college or government agency.

I wonder how many of us part-timers will be at that orientation. It is 6 hours? 9a-3p?!

And then a long exam the next day (to test how we learn?)

FEM

someone asked about where to get immunizations, drug tests, etc.

not sure if you already found somewhere... but

do your tb tests asap. it is 4 trips to the dr. and you must wait at least 3 days between 1st & 2nd visit.

not sure how long before you can do the 3rd visit. then another 3 days til 4th visit.

it is taking me 2 weeks to complete this task. most time consuming task on our list.

try:

http://www.doctors365.com

someone on the "mdc *generic f/t* fall 2011 ;-d" thread indicated some cheap prices.

" i went to doctors 365: physical $30, mmr titers $60, varicella $27, drug test $40, and ppd $12 "

also can try:

occupational medicine centers - http://omcausa.com/

$40 drug test, tb test $18 x 2... etc. call the location nearest you.

good luck

fem

Did anyone take a class called Critical Thinking?

Me, me, me!!! I took it about a year and a half ago (yes, that long. Maybe two to be honest; since time flies like a...) and let me tell you it was hard. Maybe it was the wiener head of professor. I mean, ethics had really had taken over this guy: how he spoke, dressed, acted and read, to mention a few. And, didn't I tell you. The class was on Fridays like from 5:40 PM to like 9:00 oh! Clock lol

The class is pretty much about philosophy, hence the name. You'll be talking/discussing topics and hearing familiar names such as Erickson, Socrates and a whole bunch of others. It's a very unique class. It'll take some of your sweet time so handle it right. I'm sure you'll handle "it" right. Lol

Why do you ask? Do you have to take it? I mean, it's part of the pre-requisites!
