MCP Closing

Published

I heard this morning that MCP plans to close in March. The news was talking about the strike, and how they may be coming to a resolution, but it doesn't really matter, since the hospital will be closed soon.

Didn't really see that one coming. MCP is one of the hospitals we do clincals in our school at. I hadn't heard anything about this before.

Tenet is underhanded. They were waiting for this opputunity to use it as an excuse for closing the hospital.

Well, given the number of open nursing positions in Philadelphia, maybe people can go to successful hospitals that don't abuse Nurses with mandatory OT.

And I have difficulty believing that they can't make a profit, given how busy the hospitals are. If they are not making a profit, it has more to do with poor management than nurses.

(And I have some limited experience with that facility - the HR department is atrocious)

So how is this going to affect the strike and the current contract at MCP? Will the nurses be forced to work under the current conditions (mandatory overtime) until the hospital closes?

I'm a nursing student at Drexel & got an email saying that the closing of MCP will not affect med or nursing students & Drexel is committed to education, blah, blah.

Of course the hospital closing won't affect med & nursing education because we pay through the nose for OUR education. My 1 year nursing program is grossing Drexel around $2.4 million. ($6,000 per quarter; 4 quarters; over 100 students). Med students pay more.

Drexel is as much as a scam as Tenet is. I'm being trained to be a nurse committed to the highest standards of care. Then I am supposed to work at a hospital that treats it's nurses terribly. In a way I am glad I am at Drexel because I do not have a rosy view of the working world at all.

Do you think Hahnemann Hospital might go next? The physical plant is falling apart.

Thanks for the insight, Caroline.

What a shame.

Good question. I know there was talk of closing Graduate, but I think that was before Tenet came in.

I was goinmg to attend Drexel but thought the $$ was crazy for the education provided. I work at a hospital in a suburb of Philly and have heard a lot of rumors about MCP. Money is behind everything and unforunately the nurses were the victim.

Hi everyone!

We have started a coalition of Doctors, Nurses, EMS, Legislators, Political leaders, the community, and other workers at MCP. Please visit our website for more information and to watch our progress in our new battle against Tenet.

I'm also a student at Drexel.

The funny thing is that everyone I know is planning to work for Tenet after graduation. They seem to have the best jobs in the Philadelphia area.
