I am apply for January days program. I did ok on the TEAS, I am currently ranked 34 out of 66 applicants, I have turned in my reference letters and my essay. My adminissions officer said that my essay was nicely written and that if I do well in Chem and have a great interview I should be fine.

For those of you that started in Sept., how hard was it to get in?, what really carries the most weight of getting in? and how are things so far? I am trying not to go nuts but the what- ifs are killing me!

I would strongly suggest that you all try to go into a regular program. I am in Mod 9 out of 13 right now (Med/Surg). And I must say, if I could do it over again, i would probably go somewhere else. It is a very difficult program, even for those who do not work and if you fail a class, it may take you 6 months until you can retake it, but you are paying double what you would somewhere else. If you fail, you would end up going the same amount of time as a regular program anyway, with just 10 times the stress. i have been fortunate enough to not fail any classes thus far and I work full time, but my class just loss 7 people the month before last. If anyone would like a like a little more detail of why i have this opinion, you can send me a private message, as i feel it is inappropriate to share more with everyone being able to view it...

I tried to send you a private message but I can't do that from your profile. Can you send me one so that we might discuss this further? Thanks!:D

I would also like to know more too as I am trying to get into the Jan. 09 program.

Our class only lost those 7 people because they failed the nursing math test twice and the test must be passed with an 84 in order to pass meds to patients. All that failed the test did pass the class we were in at the time. It is a tough program but you learn a lot that you must know to pass clinical. If you fail a class you do have to wait till the class is offered again. Usually around 3 months although it can take up to 6 months. If you fail the math test both times, you have to take a remediation class then retake the test in order to get into Pysch nursing. The program takes a lot of dedication. If you work and have a family, get used to not knowing what is going on with your family. Because once you are in pysch nursing (and in the night program) you are in class twice a week with off days studying and every weekend you have clinicals (Sat and Sun). Delvenia and I are now in Med-surg and I think she will agree that it is by far our toughest class thus far. I am lucky in that I have a great support system so that I can focus on school and not worry about my family or my marriage. As far as getting into the program, I was never told where I ranked. I did average on the TEAS and made a high B in chemistry. I had a great essay, great interview and great references. Do not stress over getting in or not, because once you are in you will start stressing over your classes. I fully believe that this school is where I need to be. It was the only one in area (on this side of the water) that offered a night program. I have learned a lot and know that I have the skills (and gaining skills everyday) to be a great nurse because of the instructors I have had. There are things that people do not like about the school but you will have that at any school you attend. Good luck! If you want more detailed info just let me know.

Hi, thanks for sharing your perspective with me (and others), it has helped to ease my stress about getting in the program. I do have just a few concerns though...it seems as though (through admissions) I have been told completely different things then the others in my Chem. class and different than what my Chem. teacher tells us. I was told to do my essay on 7 questions, and no page/word limit. Everyone in my class was told different topics, some just one and some about 3, and a limit of 150 words. I hope that my essay being 8 pages, is not going to hurt my chances with them thinking I did not follow directions!:uhoh3: If all else, they will at least remember mine  Overall, I just feel that information is on lock and key! You cant get any answers and when you do, you get a few different answers. There is a lot about admissions that I just dont understand and it is frustrating:angryfire.

as afar as admissions is concerned, they may have changed some things so I think you should go with what admissions asked you to do

Like Liz said, the school is not a horrible school, but I still would have made a different decision if I could do it again. One of the reasons for me is the fact that the school is not NLNAC accredited and may not be for a while to come, which is contrary to what I was told when I applied. according to the NLNAC's website, only the BSN program at the VA Beach campus is a candidate right now. The Newport News campus is also showing as a candidate. I will have to get clarification on how this effects the VA Beach RN students from our director. Our new Director is wonderful, but unfortunately for her, she has had quite a few things on her plate to do because the program is so new. My main reasons for wishing I went somewhere else are the costs of tuition and the time constraints. it is almost impossble to work full time while going to MCI, but people who work are usually the students interested in the night program. I am starting to get very frustrated. Also, because the classes are so large now (29 students w/1 theory instructor and 10 students per clinical instructor) it is very hard to get that one on one time you need at clinical. We do have tutoring, but again it is usually held prior to class when we are supposed to be at work.

As far as the teachers, our class has been very fortunate in that we havent really had any bad teachers thus far, it is just getting much tougher and if you fail a class, you have a very hard time getting back into the program. At least that is what the 8 additional students we have in our class who did either fail or leave for another reason is telling me, so that in itself scares me to death....
