Hey I found out last night, I got into the days RN program:yeah:, i was just wondering if there is anyone else on here who did????
did u have any medical experience when u started the program and was it as hard as they say or is it managable
Maybe some of the others who are further along in the program or have graduated the program will come to chime in to this thread.
I have not started yet, my chemistry class doesn't start until 9/15, but I have no prior medical experience either. I am a CNA though other than that I don't have any experience. I think if your financial aid is worked out and you do well on the prerequisites it would be hard for you NOT to get in.
Just my two cents although the admission rep did tell me that the program has mostly LPNs returning for their RN in the program so if they had to pick between a person with no experience and a person who already is an LPN they would probably choose the LPN.
Try not to focus on any of that, but keep focused on blowing chemistry, math, and that computer class out the water!
lil_bit04 and nursn4me,
I am in the program now. I just finished pharm II and about to start concepts II. I do not have any medical experiences and so far I am doing pretty good. If you want to work in the medical field, you can apply to be a patient care tech(i think that is the title) after concepts I. Sentara has hired a few of my classmates and they have already been able to apply what they have learned. I currently work full time and attend school in the evenings. If I had the choice, I would not work or I would quit my job and work as a PCT. The chem teacher is great. Take all the notes she gives you and study them!!!! You will need some of the information for future classes. I'm sorry I do not have advise on the computer or math class but I did hear that you learn a lot in the classes that will help you with your future classes. When you have Dr. Nik for ANP I & II and Micro, get her to give you a review before the tests and use that as a study guide for the test. In my class we have 4 nurses(lpn) and a few corpsman and cna's. The majority of us have no medical experiences. As long as you study and READ, you will do fine. So far, we have not lost anyone. We still have our original 25. Also, the thing that saved my in ANP and micro was a study group. It really helped me and I would highly recommend it.
Good Luck to both of you.

Thank you!!!!! I will make sure to read all my chapters. I am glad to hear there were alot of students who were accepted who did not have the medical background like my admission rep stated was a stickler. Who knows maybe she was just trying to shake me up a little. It definitely eases my mind that I should have a good chance of getting accepted provided that I do well in my prereqs.
Since you have no medical background may I ask where did you get your letter of references? My previous employer will provide me a reference but my current employer I have only been on the job 2 months so I am little skeptical of asking. I am concerned about the references. Thanks again!!!!
Okay so they will allow a coworker to write a reference for you? I didn't think they would. I can get a coworker to write a letter of reference for me no problem.
My ex Supervisor is going to write a letter of reference too. I am thinking about calling the office manager at my old job to see if she would write a letter of reference.
How soon after you turned in all that was requested did you know if you were accepted for the program?
My understanding from my packet was that they needed only 3 letters. It did not state that it must come from anyone in particular. Check your packet to see since it could have changed since last year. I did not get an interview until after I had all of my paperwork turned in and I had financial aid covered. Once I had the interview, I received a call within 2 days advising that I got in. I had my interview the beginning of Dec and class started Jan 2 (i think). I had finished all of my prereqs by oct but they do not do the interviews until a month before class starts. Also, keep in mind that they have 5 alternates. If all 25 pass ANP I&II, micro and the other classes before concepts, the alternates will not continue on with the class. MCI can only have 25 in the actual nursing classes due to clinicals. All of our alternates have not come back to begin with another class (that I am aware of). If you are offered an alternate place be prepared to not continue on if everyone passes. The alternates in my class seem to not have had this explained to them very well. Several were very upset.
Wow thanks for the heads up. I was supposed to have an interview this past friday after financial aid was done, but my admission rep told me the director stated he no longer needs to interview with me because everything is good and financial aid is on track so he didn't need to see me.
I was very surprised that everything worked out with financial aid I only have to pay that $100 a month. Everything else was covered with financial aid.
So now I am waiting for my first prerequisites to start. I wonder if I will have to interview after my prerequisites. So did you have two interviews? One after financial aid was done and then one after your prereqs were completed? I am trying to determine if I will still be required to interview for the program since he cancelled mine and said I was set.
You will have an interview after the prereqs. I only had one interview and it was with the director of the program at the time. Our director now is Mrs. Lipsmyer. She is great. When I had my interview it was with the director and a student. The students participate in the interview as part of their leadership training I believe. My advice for the interview is dress professionally, come with questions to ask them and be yourself. They will give you answers that the admissions rep can't. Try not to be too nervous. The program is very intense but so worth it. I am loving every minute of it. Your classmates will become your extended family and you will encourage each other to do their best.
Thanks for the heads up! I know the program will be very intense being that it is only 15 months but so worth it. I actually can't wait. I just want the chemistry class to hurry up and be done with it. I ordered a book Chemistry homework helper book it is supposed to be very good for people with no or very little chemistry background. Hopefully that will help me in addition to the chemistry notes that another MCI student provided me with.
Are you in the Virginia Beach area? I am in Richmond

Lil Bit,
I have applied for the January class too. I have the chem notes I will forward them to you. I think you are in a very good position because you don't have children and you can afford to quit your job while in the program.
I heard the program is tough, intense, and fast paced so I will not be working either. I do have children so it will be a challenge at times to stay focused and find quiet time for me to concentrate on my studies but I will get it done.
Okay I will send the notes your way good luck!
