Hey I found out last night, I got into the days RN program:yeah:, i was just wondering if there is anyone else on here who did????
They do have and evening class, the hours from what they told me in admissions are Mon-Fri 5-1030 and Saturdays from 8-4 and 12 hour shift on Sat. and Sun. once you get into clinicals it is 12 hour shift on Sat and Sun. That is just what I have been told, the hours may vary.As for financial aide, well I was able to get federal loans but I did not qualify for ANY grants and I have not worked in years, and my husband was deployed most of the tax year, so our taxable income was extremely low. You can get a private loan, or pay for the rest out of pocket.
Holy smoke 12 hour shift every weekend? Wow maybe I should consider daytime. I understand why you wouldnt have qualified for grants but I guess one will never know. Well whatever the cost it will be more than worth it when you graduate and have nursing degree in hand!
I am not working, my husband is the sole support. He co-signed with me. the financial aide department is great about finding assistance to help pay. You won't know until you try, what you are going to be eligible for, so just try.I have a monthly co-pay, but it is reasonable.
Well I may talk to someone about the next class, I have already taken Chem, math 120 and a computer class so I guess I wont need those and they were all within the last year at John Tyler.
I have accepted a part-time job but my hubby doesnt like me working in the evening so I dont think I will be working there long. I have been at home for the last 1.5 years with my toddler son and taking 1 class a semester since really that is all I could really afford since I wasnt working.
I am going to call an admission rep tomorrow.
the 12 hour shift is during clinicals. And that is only after you have passed the science classes. Once you are into just the nursing classes, the clinicals are 12 hour shifts. This week is finals for this mod. Tuesday, after Memorial Day starts the next mod. My class will be doing Psychiatric Nursing. Clinical days have increased from 3 days 0630 to 1400 during a 5 week mod to the Psychiatric Nursing to every M, W, F 0630 to 1900, for the 4 weeks of the 5 week mod. Even though the schedule reflects 6:30 in the morning to 7pm in the evening, we were told by the acting-director that we may not stay the whole time, but that the time was "set aside" for us. So whether you are in evening classes (which utilized the weekend days) or the daytime class (which utilize M-F) you will still have to commit to the 12 hours shifts, whether during the week or on the weekend. We were told, that we (day class) may have to do a clinical on the weekend if that was the only time admin could schedule with the participating medical facilities to get our clinical time completed. So your time must be flexible.
Wow, $34k I have never applied for financial aid and I am not working so I am sure I would qualify for pell and the works but looks like I would still have to come out of pocket. What are you ladies doing to cover tuition or does financial aid cover everything?
I got lucky with all the financial aid stuff. I got the stafford loan and then one personal loan to cover the shortfall. Which left me with a $75 monthly payment.
This program is definantly fast paced. I would suggest not working if you can, because it's a lot easier. I was working during the pre-reqs and the beginning of the program but I just couldn't do it anymore. I quit working, got rid of my apartment, and moved back in with my parents. It takes a lot more stress off of me at least, not having to work.
But don't worry if you do have to work, there are a lot of people in my class who have to work full time and go to school full time and have children .. And some of them are pulling in the top grades! So there are definantly ways to make it work. good luck with talking to financial aid or the admin rep.

I hope everything works out for you!!!!
Thanks ladies, I know anything worth having is worth sacrifices. 15 month is such a short period of time out my life to be able to hopefully walk away with a nursing degree it is something I am willing to do.
I think it would probably be wise for me not to work. I know some who juggle family, school, and work and are able to do well in school but I am not one of them. I am the type of student that has devote extra time for studying to make sure I understand everything.
I cant wait for you ladies to start, I am excited for you I really am! Oh I did call the Newport news campus and I have an appt next week. I couldn't come in any sooner. I forgot to ask when the next class starts.

I know the next class in Va Beach starts during the 1st week of Sept, and think Va Beach and NN are on the same schedule.
Hi,
I just wanted to say. I graduated the RN program from NN this april. If anyone has any questions you can email me at [email protected]. Our class went through hell but, hopefully it made it better for future classes.

Hello Everyone! I'm new to this site, thanks for all the information and comments i really enjoy reading them. I just registered for my chemistry pre-requisite i start class on the 28th. I'm planning to start my RN program in Sept. 08. I will be attending evening classes at MCI VA Beach. I'm just a little worried about the chemistry class, because i need to pass it before i can be accepted into the program. I would really appreciate any advice or info. from anyone that have taken this class. Things like what to expect or tips on learning the material, I've heard the course is very intense.
