MCI admissions rep said. . .

I could take the LPN course and then if I wanted to come back for the RN course, I would only have the take the 6 or so classes to make up the difference. I think he said I would pay a 'per class' price.

Has anyone out there done this?

I've read other threads where some of you are saying that MCI doesn't even take it's own credits - this makes me wonder if I was given some bad information.

Also, I have one more question, I have an appointment to go back there to take some tests (he said it would take about 2 hours) - is this the infamous TEAS? If so, I'm a little worried that I should have studied for it. help?

Which campus? I know that there is someone in my RN class that got LPN through MCI and is having to take the full load. If you want to be and RN, I would shoot for the RN program. If you want to be and LPN program and become and RN later, then that's great too - but if RN is your shortterm goal, then I wouldn't spend the 12 months in the LPN program only to spend another 15 months in the RN program - or all the extra money! I would ask to speak to the admissions director or nursing director to get the correct information about LPN to RN.

As for the test - yes- it's the TEAS! It's not bad. For LPN, it's reading comprehension and math. For RN you'll also need to take English (grammar) and science. If you have time and think you should study, most bookstores have a Nursing Entrance Test Study Guide. It'll have study tools and explanations as well as practice questions. If it's been awhile since you've done math (ratios, conversions, simple algebra), then it may be worth it to pick one up.

Good luck!

VB campus.

I went ahead and canceled my appointment. It's been a VERYlong time for me!! haha!! I'm looking at other options at this point, but would still like any feedback from anyone else that might know the information.

thanx

without saying too much, read the fine print in your course catalog. mci diplomas are terminal. LPN-RN students have to start over even if they got their LPN @ MCI. be careful.

good luck :)

skip the LPN. It just doesn't make sense to take almost the same amount of school and get less reward.

Seeing how MCI reps are paid recruiters, the RN class was either full, or they figured that you would pay twice if you went LPN-RN.

Yeah its the TEAS . . . I took it for the RN program today. I would advise getting one of those nurse entrance exam study guides, like by McGraw-Hill, it was like 20 bucks at Barnes and Noble and it was good. Take good care of it, and after you are done, return it, lol. I used it for one day, I wrote in a separate notebook and then took it back after I knew I passed the test. I need to find out if Bon Secours will take my test results from that TEAS attempt because they use the same website ATITesting.com for their stuff too. Then it will help me make a decision. I don't know the 35000 is a lot of money to spend on a ADN but if you can do it in about 18 months, it might be worth it, I am not sure yet.

Thanks Helen. Now that you mention Bon Secours, do you have a good link to get information about the courses they provide? I haven't had much luck finding info on anything but the services they provide to patients.

**ok, I can be a little goofy at times, I just found the page as soon as I posted this. :/

I really want to go to MCI but am unsure about paying for it. Last year they told me that they were a private school so they could only use 90% of federal funding or something for tuition, and that probably will not work for me, so I will probably have to go to BSMSON, but as long as I get the RN I guess that is all that matters, even though it will take 2x the time. :) www.bonsecours.com/bsmson is the website. Take care

Helen, the 90% leaves you with a 100$ payment each month. I wrapped mine up in my loans. You can work it so you pay nothing out of pocket. It's a little overwhelming to have to find multiple sources for the money, but I did it and it wasn't that bad.

Which MCI are you at? Because last year when they told me this, I had like 3200 dollars left to finance, and that equals out to way more than 100 dollars a month, which I can't afford at this time with a new baby. I CAN afford the 100, just not more than that right now. So I am going to go up there and find out what the amount is again and how to finance it, because I also can't get private loans because of credit.

Newport News.

If you are trying that one, who is your advisor? They have ways of letting you pay later.....also, if you made less $$ in 2008 than in 2009 (like most people), you can reapply for the 2009 fafsa, etc. and you should get more assistance.

Other than that, if you are married and he has the larger income, try filing "married separate" for 2008. It may cost you some tax return$$, but could help you on the 2009 fafsa app/ staffords/etc.

Im at the Newport News one too. I can't get more assistance than I already am, my EFC is already 0. Maybe something has changed or I am not sure, I will have to talk to them, but I called today and my adviser didn't call back.
