I didnt see any thread for this school so thought i start one
Just wanted to know is there is anyone applying to MCG/GHSU summer 2012 and/or attending the school at the moment to give inputs about the school
I'm currently working on my application to submit it for its early decision
@lizyun, I don't anyone in this topic so far can tell you if you're good enough to get in because we are all trying to get in!lol. we won't really know what it takes until we actually get accepted into the program. I wanted to ask you where did you do your shadowing???I wanted to shadow a nurse but the hospital around me, Gwinnett Medical Center, doesn't allow you to shadow unless your required by a program. I also tried Northside Medical, but they never replied to my email.
Hey karamarie! Love your name btw...
I did shadow in the pharmacy at Northside when I was considering going in that direction, but that I got through nurse friend of mine who worked there and hooked me up with the head pharmacist.
But now I live in FL so, unfortunately, can't be of much help to you for shadowing nurses...
My only advice is to be PERSISTENT. It helped that I was already part of the auxillary at the hospital but even then, I had to follow up by phone, email, and stopped by several times before the lady in charge of shadowing found something for me. It's definitely difficult when we're only pre-nursing students but persistence always pays off. Emails are so easy to forget so I would say your next step is to actually stop by the HR office and get in contact with whoever's in charge of that...and get a business card from them before you leave to follow up later. It's rare that they get back to you first. Actually, the first thing I did was ask my school's nursing administrator if they had any contacts...so maybe you could call up GHSU and ask them for a referral. They're bound to know someone since their nurses do rotations at all the major hospitals.
Kara,
For most of nursing school at MCG Augusta, you will have class Monday and Friday. Times for class will very but I'd average it from 8-2pm of class. Tues, Wed, and Thurs will be clinical days. They vary alot depending on what clinical rotation your in. All clinicals are 7-8hrs long.
As far as work goes, I work as a PCT at Emory every other weekend and it's not bad at all. Im not a brainiac, I HAVE to study. So juggling study time, work, social life, and clinical paper work is tough but absolutely manageable.
Also, MCG and University (another hospital here) have PCT/work programs for nursing students (MCG and ASU students can participate in this). Bascially you work an 8hr shift every week as a PCT and the pay is around 10$ an hr. So that could be a work option for you.
Lizyun, have you heard of the CNL program? It's for people who have their degree in another subject. The program is a yr and a half and you graduate with your masters in science and can take the NCLEX. I dont know the specifics of the program but I think it's something you could look into.
MCGNurse,
You know, I did consider the CNL program and to be honest, I have a lot of questions regarding exactly what they do and more than anything, their job prospects. From what I've read in this forum though, CNL's have it rough navigating hospital politics and most don't end up using what they learned b/c they get hired as RNs regardless (I think this is due to the current economy and how most hospitals don't have CNLs in their budget). But correct me on this if I have the wrong idea....

I am also concerned by this too.
Hmmm,
Well I cant shed too much light on the actual program because Im not in it lol. I havent read up on allnurses CNL forums but I'm sure they will have the best advice or insight to the CNL pathway.
I do know that you get your RN which is what hospitals want.
I know alot of students from the class that graduated in December 2010 that were hired immediately.
I think it really depends on your quality of work, grades, and I guess whatever the hospitals hiring process is.
The program does go very fast so I can see where it would be hard to retain all the information.
Sorry I dont know much! I just thought it would be an option :)
so much information!!! excited...and a lil bit nervous/scared
Can only try my best and hope that I get in
@mcgnurse...you said your essay is paragraph long and so far mine is about a lil over a page just touching up on why i want to be a nurse what i've done so far(experiences) and of course why i chose the school...so do you think that may be too long???? and about 35 being accepted to augusta...that is so little...do you know why its 35 in augusta and 50 in athens?
Hello all,I'm so glad this thread was started because I am very much interested in applying to the program. I do have some reservations about whether I'll get in though considering how competitive it is....
I don't have many volunteer experience b/c I work 35 hrs/week and attend school part-time which leaves me very little time for much else. I've managed to shadow a few nurses at the local hospital for around 20 hours recently (absolutely loved it, btw) and volunteered at the same hospital for about 30 hours thus far this year (should have close to 70 by year end however).
My overall GPA is only a 3.4 but have A's in all of my science classes as well as the other pre-requisites and my TEAS score is decent at 86.7% (debating on retaking) As far as any other experience, I have a bachelor's in Business and 3 years experience in accounting, which is unlikely to be helpful but I mention here anyway....
Would anyone have an idea whether I have a good chance at getting in based on my background? Or should I not even bother...
Any thoughts are appreciated!
You should def apply!! Go for it i believe you can get in for sure!
@lizyun, how was the TEAS Exam. I am studying to take it in Sept. Any topics that stood out to you? I do have the study guide, but I can't afford those online practice tests. I've been going to the bookstore at least once a week, looking at the Kaplan and other study guides. I also use the McGraw-Hill study guide at home.
I am most concerned about the randomness of the science even though I did well in all my sciences.

Tizita,
I just talked to my roommate who just started the program this summer and she said her essay was 1200 words!
Mine was only a paragraph. I guess it really really varies! So I'm sure your length will be fine. :)
The only reason I could think of 35 Augusta students is budget cuts but I really have no clue.

Can I ask what's your school schedule like? I heard nursing school is stressful but do you think it is at all feasible to work and go to a school such as MCG at the same time. I currently work every other weekend since I'm staying focused on schoolwork. I was hoping that if I get in to the Augusta campus that I can find work as a CNA or even better be trained to be a PCT by a hospital.
I need to visit that campus sooner or later because I also am interested in Augusta State University as a backup school. However, I have no clue what Augusta is truly like or where I could live if I go to school out there. Have you heard anything about the quality of Augusta State's nursing program?
