U.S.A. Georgia

I didnt see any thread for this school so thought i start one

Just wanted to know is there is anyone applying to MCG/GHSU summer 2012 and/or attending the school at the moment to give inputs about the school

I'm currently working on my application to submit it for its early decision

Hey guys!

I am also applying for the MCG Summer 2012 Program for the Athens Program!! However, I am also applying to Clayton State, West GA, and Piedmont college. I went to GA State for 2 years and was planning on getting into their program..but like someone mentioned earlier...its sooo competative!! My GPA is a 3.5 and I think my ACT score for English was ok :/. But does anyone know how many volunteer hours we should have? Because I volunteer at Grady but I haven't had the time to put in too many hours lately so I was wondering how many MCG wanted? Also, if we apply for the early admissions deadline for October 15th then when do yall think we would hear back?

Hey steph6543 glad you can join us!

yes they def are competitive! you have a pretty good gpa...esp compared to mine

They didnt specify how many hours they want...but i pretty sure enough to get a good experience from it

When applying for early admission if your accepted you'll hear good news by or before dec but if u dont get accepted they will keep you in on the app process with those applying after early admission and see if you top those to get accepted

I'm also looking into clayton fall 2012 also :) but i hope(really really really hope) i get into MCG that would be a dream!!!!:heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat

Hey guys! I just thought I'd add my two cents into this discussion. I just recently applied to GHSU for a nursing BSN and the advisor told me that the only time they look at the SAT scores is to make sure you got over the minumum (450 SAT 18 ACT). So no need to retake them in order to make them "competitive"! I have a 3.6 and pretty good volunteer hours. Also worked in a medical enviroment for 2+ years so hopefully my chances are good! I will update you all if I receive a letter of acceptance. Hopefully they let us know soon! Good luck to you all

WOW! that is a wonderful application you've sent out from what you said here! I'm sure with more people with you applicantion I'll probably wont even be considered lol

I just found out that I have a 440 on the SAT :/

yes, good luck to us all indeed!!! :D

Hey Everyone!

I'm currently a senior at MCG - Augusta. If you guys have any questions, I hope I can answer them. I LOVE MCG! It's the best decision I made in my college career.

As far as application process goes, they do like high GPAs and any experience/volunteering/work related stuff. For our class, I believe the lowest GPA was in 3.5 (I dont know of anyone in Augusta who had lower).

Also, the Athens campus is usually harder to get into because so many people apply there. I applied to the Athens campus (with a 3.71, experience, but my SATs were 490 reading and 510 math), I was not accepted in Athens but was asked to go to the Augusta campus. It's been wonderful. I'm from the Gainesville region of GA and applied and was accepted to many different nursing schools. I chose MCG (although 3 hrs away from home) because of the reputation and great clinicals. The professors are also helpful and knowledgeable.

I hope I've shed some insight! Best of luck to all of you!

Thank you for joining our topic! We truly appreciate it.:redpinkhe

Do you know how heavily they look at ACT/SAT scores. I was told by MCG that they only look at ACT English or SAT Critical Reading, but do you think they look at other parts of the ACT? I ask because I am strong at English and reading but not very good at math. I take the ACT in 2 weeks. I have a 3.67 GPA.

Also, for some reason, I was more attracted to the Augusta campus more than the Athens campus because I felt that the medical community would be larger there and more to my benefit to find work. I have been working as a CNA for 5 months now. I hope that as little experience this may be that it may benefit my application. I also did about 3-4 months of volunteering for 2 places.

I also am somewhat clueless about the app essay because for some reason its so hard to put it into words this immense feeling to be a nurse. I don't know even how to start the essay. Don't want to come off as cheesy in the essay.

Sorry for the long post. Any input would be appreciated.

Hello all,

I'm so glad this thread was started because I am very much interested in applying to the program. I do have some reservations about whether I'll get in though considering how competitive it is....

I don't have many volunteer experience b/c I work 35 hrs/week and attend school part-time which leaves me very little time for much else. I've managed to shadow a few nurses at the local hospital for around 20 hours recently (absolutely loved it, btw) and volunteered at the same hospital for about 30 hours thus far this year (should have close to 70 by year end however).

My overall GPA is only a 3.4 but have A's in all of my science classes as well as the other pre-requisites and my TEAS score is decent at 86.7% (debating on retaking) As far as any other experience, I have a bachelor's in Business and 3 years experience in accounting, which is unlikely to be helpful but I mention here anyway....

Would anyone have an idea whether I have a good chance at getting in based on my background? Or should I not even bother... Any thoughts are appreciated!

Hey!

Well, I'm not sure about ACT scoring. All I know is my SATs were very normal and nothing impressive. So Im guessing they look at all aspects of your application and decide. My SATs were average but I had a good GPA and experience. So, your GPA, work, and volunteering seem great (even if your ACT is as high as youd want)

What about your math/science class grades? If your ACT is a little low, you could always redeem yourself with good math/science prereq grades.

Augusta campus is great for Adults/Med-Surg clinicals (because MCG and Grady are the ONLY level 1 trauma hospitals in the state). Also, Augusta has a more medical community which is nice.

Athens campus probably has a better children/peds clinical rotation because they go to CHOA (its a long drive though!). Also, since it's in Athens, it's more of a college town and they have the Dawgs!

Of course I'm biased to Augusta :) but I'm sure Athens is great too.

Another thing, Augusta only accepted 35 students this year, I think Athens was 50. Very competitive.

For my essay, I wrote 1 good paragraph. I cant exactly remember what it said. when are you planning to apply? I can send my application essay (in a private message) to whoever wants to see it or get any ideas from it. I wouldnt advice copying it! :D My essay is on a separate computer that I wont have access to until the weekend, but Id love to share it with anyone.

@lizyun, I don't anyone in this topic so far can tell you if you're good enough to get in because we are all trying to get in!lol. we won't really know what it takes until we actually get accepted into the program. I wanted to ask you where did you do your shadowing???I wanted to shadow a nurse but the hospital around me, Gwinnett Medical Center, doesn't allow you to shadow unless your required by a program. I also tried Northside Medical, but they never replied to my email.

Lizyun,

have you heard of the CNL program? It's for people who have their degree in another subject. The program is a yr and a half and you graduate with your masters in science and can take the NCLEX. I dont know the specifics of the program but I think it's something you could look into.

Karamarie, Northeast GA does shadowing that doesnt have crazy requirements. (at least it didnt 2 yrs ago when I did mine). Maybe something to look into! :)

O my goodness, the more you tell me about the campus, the more I fall in love with this school. 35 people per year? wow. I am very interested in trauma nursing, so I feel even more attracted to the Augusta campus. I have made all A's in my sciences(The only science I have left to complete is Micro, which I am doing) and an A in Statistics, but an C in College Algebra. That's about it when it comes to Math and Science. You see, I thought that they just looked at GPA and that was it. I would really appreciate it if they looked at what I actually took and how I did it them.

Oh by the way, I used to live near Gainesville, Buford to be exact. I looked at Brenau(so many people from my school want to go there, but I'm not interested in private schools and their tuition)

Hey kara!

I made mostly As in my math and sciences so I tried to up play that in my application/resume (since my SATs werent that great). My friend goes to Brenau and loves it. But I agree with you, tuition is an issue.
