MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I have applied to MCG's MSN-CNL Program to start in Fall 2010, and I am wondering if current/past students could tell me when (as in what month) they received a phone call for an interview or acceptance/rejection letters.

Additionally, I applied to the Athens Campus program, so will the interview be held in Athens, or will I need to drive to Augusta? Thanks for helping me plan ahead :) I really hope I am the type of candidate they are looking for!

Is anyone having problems downloading Java for Vista8? I got a new computer recently and it has a Windows 7 system. But the only available options on the download page are Windows XP or Windows Vista. I tried to dl it using the windows vista tab while I was watching the tutorial but it wasn't working out like the tutorial's. Does anyone know what I could do to make this work? Maybe someone else with Windows 7? Thanks!!

Mine were organized as per term. I did this:

Login to PULSE > click Student Services & Financial Aid > click Financial Aid > click Award > click Award for Aid Year > click on the Award Overview tab > scroll down

I'm actually canceling some of my disbursement, but it isn't reflected on PULSE yet. I'm excited to be attending MCG, but their Financial Aid and Admissions offices are a lot slower than my last college - I'm not used to that :/

thanks

Hi Everybody!

I was just reading some of this to procrastinate from studying for finals! I am in the current CNL class, graduating in Dec. and I wanted to let yall know not to stress out too much about the med terms and drug calc tests. They are pretty easy and I think we got 2 or 3 tries on them, plus they are open book (pretty easy for med term). Also, if you didn't already find out the drug calc software is not compatible with macs... just something to think about. Anyway, feel free to ask me any other questions you may have. Good luck when you start in Aug! I'm sure I will see many of you around.

Hi Cara! Thank you so much for checking out the thread. Do you any basic advice for us, do's and don't sort of things? Or advice for any of the classes?

Hi,

I will be attending CNL program in Augusta campus and have not taken CPR program yet. If anybody knows any information on CPR program arranged these days in Augusta, please let me know. Jimmy

Cara1017-

Thank you so much for writing! You really made me feel better about those tests! I really need to get busy studying the medical terminology, I haven't started...I'm a procrastinator as well :) It looks so overwhelming. How do you recommend studying it? Note cards? And yes I found out the hard way the CD didn't work on mac, as well as a couple of other CDs that are required for the program. I had to buy a Windows computer just for class, thankfully my brother got it for me at a good price. Anyways, thanks a bunch for the heads up :)

Hey guys,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to everyone. We were finishing up finals and then I went on a short vacation before we start back next week. Hopefully your orientation went well! I think for the med terms test all I did was print out the lists of terms and just looked over them a little and then took the test. It is a lot of matching if I remember correctly and I was able to look up any that I did not know since it was online. I just kept the lists next to me so I could double check as I took the test. Really, those tests were pretty easy and not anything to stress over!

I can't really think of any good do's and don'ts but, I would say to enjoy the breaks you have and remember to take some time for yourself. Also, the fall is really fun/new/overwhelming all at the same time, but before you know it you will be close with your classmates and then it will be almost done! Also, you really should invest in a good calender because there is a lot to keep up with, and make sure you write in pencil because there will definitely be some schedule changes!

The spring was the semester that I think we studied the most and had the most difficult course work (with your first med-surg class and pharm), but the summer was crazy, busy, fun and annoying all at the same time. But, there was less going to the library to study, although there are probably people in my class who would disagree with that. By the time you get to this point next year you will really be ready for to be almost done.

As far as advice goes, I think the best thing I heard was just to remember that you always have tomorrow to work on stuff, so take it one day at a time, and to give yourself a break once in a while. You can definitely get yourself bogged-down with all the work you have (especially if you look at your calender), but you will get it done and sometimes just going to bed is better than trying to stay up and cram all night long. Also, it helps to figure out how you learn best. Some people study by re-watching the lectures and some read/do the study guide. I am a fan of going over the notes and book while I fill out a study guide and then just study those. However, some teachers make questions that are more similar to the study guides than others so that can be a little annoying. Just try to do your best and not get overwhelmed.

Hopefully some of this helps! It really is a good program and I feel sure that I will be well prepared to become a nurse in a few months time!

Hi guys. I have been reading your posts and out of curiosity. How is the MCG direct entry MSN-cnl program so far?

I intend to apply for the program Fall 2011. I graduated with a Math degree (gpa 3.31) and plan to start working on the pre-reqs Jan next year. so far I only have Math and Chemistry courses (for the pre-reqs) with B+ and B.

So I have to ace GRE to be a real contender candidate. What do they look for in a candidate? I have no healthcare experience at all, only a Biology tutoring job at a nearby college (& that's not even a healthcare job). What do I need to do to make myself a better candidate?

Hey, I LOVE it so far. I'm on the Athens campus. The professors are great, we have a great group in Athens, and I like going to lectures and lab. We start clinical in a couple weeks.

Everyone on our campus comes from different backgrounds. Most of us do not have any health care experience, but some of us volunteered at a local hospital or worked in a healthcare facility in some capacity. However, we're all pretty upbeat and committed individuals who are supportive of each other.

I would suggest getting A's in the rest of your pre-requisites, doing the very best you can at the GRE, writing a good essay, and being friendly/professional at your interview. The Program Manager Olivia Mitchell is the perfect person to contact with your question - she could probably give you some statistics or suggestions.

I agree with everything that Chenda said. I'm also at the Athens campus and love the program. Our group is amazing. We have very diverse backgrounds and work very well together. I love that there aren't classes scheduled every day. I'm usually doing school work on our days 'off' but not having to physically be at campus makes things a lot more flexible.

One thing I would add is to have someone look over your resume, and definitely highlight your tutoring experience. Being able to teach others is a great quality to have, as patient care will involve patient and family education.

Hi Anne,

I am also at the Athens campus with my two classmates who have already replied to you. The program is awesome! I think that your GPA, plus A's and B's in prereqs plus a good GRE will really make you a competitive candidate. You might want to consider getting at least some exposure to a health care setting (even if it's just observing or setting up talk meetings with nurses) because "why nursing?" will be a big theme of your admission interview. I agree that your teaching/tutoring experience will be a huge asset and many of our classmates come from tutoring or education backgrounds this year! By no means do they expect any real clinical work experience though going in. Have you looked into some independent study options for prereqs? LSU-baton rouge offers psych and lifespan dev. and their prices are really affordable, you can use UGA or another university's testing center for tests and the other work is submitted online or by mail. UGA independent study offers STAT, but you might have that since you were a math major and all. Having campus flexibility (there are 4 now) will also help increase your chances. Good Luck to you!

Hello, I am also looking at getting into the CNL program for Fall 2011. For those of you in the Athens campus for the program, what is class schedule like? are you at school everyday? Just trying to get an idea because I live in atlanta and not sure if I will be able to make the commute.

Is anyone commuting from atlanta to athens to the program? how feasible is it?
