MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I have applied to MCG's MSN-CNL Program to start in Fall 2010, and I am wondering if current/past students could tell me when (as in what month) they received a phone call for an interview or acceptance/rejection letters.

Additionally, I applied to the Athens Campus program, so will the interview be held in Athens, or will I need to drive to Augusta? Thanks for helping me plan ahead :) I really hope I am the type of candidate they are looking for!

JG2010 and attilamom, I also applied. Feel free to message me!

There's still nothing on my PULSE about Financial Aid, but I think someone on here said that the Fin Aid Office would post after July 7th? I'll call tomorrow, and I'll post again if I find out anything different (besides, PULSE is still saying that I haven't done my Direct Loan Counseling... and I have).

Has anyone started buying textbooks yet? I wish we knew which ones we need right away and which ones we don't need until - let's say - a month from now. I plan on just using Amazon.com and Half.com to buy mine - in my experience, college bookstores tend to mark up a lot :/

Five weeks until Orientation!

I went ahead and bought all of the books (including all of the recommended ones for NURS6700) I got pretty much everything from Amazon.com and I ended up spending about $550.

I sent an email to the financial aid office about what pulse was saying (bc mine said the same thing!!) and never recieved a reply. However, they did take the message off my pulse account. So, they mustve atleast read the email.

I called this morning regarding finacial aid. The lady in the admissions office who I spoke to said processing has begun, if everything was completed, on July 7th and any day now we should see our reward/eligibility info come up on pulse. She said just to keep checking. She also said that refunds through e-deposit go out Aug 24. In the past, I have always used e-deposit at my other colleges and seem to get the money a lot sooner than people getting refunded by check. For the ones who were concerned with finicial aid, you may want to consider signing up for it on pulse.

For my textbooks I usually use amazon like others suggested and textbooks.com. Textbooks.com have free shipping as well and gaurenteed buy back prices. I have been trying to really shop around since we needed so many books. If anyone else has found any great deals please let me know.

As for the scrubs. I am only 5 "3" and I ordered cherokee but in petite/short and they are perfect length. The Grey's Anatomy scrubs are really nice though, they are just a little expensive.

Hope this helps :) !! I can't believe we will be starting in just a few weeks!

Hi! I'm going to look for apartments in Augusta on Friday; can anyone tell me good neighborhoods and areas to avoid? Thanks!!

Specializes in None.

-The finaid office requested that I fax in a completion letter from Direct loans counseling and then they fixed it on pulse. If you go back into direct loans, just print the last page that says something about counsleing completed.

-I have ordered all my textbooks except for 3 that i couldn't find on amazon. I wish we knew if we could use an older edition for a few of these. That sure would cut the cost by hundreds!

I agree with the rest of ya'll that Amazon and similar websites is the best place to buy books! The bookstores rip you off. I don't see any kind of medical terminology book on the book list, but there is a link to a medical terminology website, does anyone know if this is all we're going to need? I'm assuming that's correct but just wanted to check. Also, it says that the medical terminology and medication calculation are self learning modules and we will have a test. Does this mean we will need to learn this all on our own?

Thanks guys!

Yes, the medical terminolgy/ drug calculations/ apa writing guide are all self taught modules that will have tests that you must pass with an 85% or higher in order to continue on with the program ( at least thats what each module says under 6700). I currently work in an ER as a tech, and I can offer some advice, print out the med term now and start learning it, try to associate it with medical terms and procedures you already know about, it helps you break apart words in the future for their intended meaning. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the reply! :) Has anyone started working on the drug dosage calculations? I got the book and CD that was recommended in the book list, it's so much to learn! I haven't even started looking at medical terminology and APA stuff. It's already getting a little overwhelming :uhoh3:

Udawg-

Lets see, since I am a huge fan of accelerated programs and online self taught classes, let me see if I can give you some advice. As far as the APA stuff, its just writing tips and how to contstruct a professional nursing paper, just get the manual and thumb through it, thats an open book test ( so dont sweat that too much).

For the Med Terminology, just print out the lists and carry them with you so you can look them over whenever you have a chance, when you feel like you have some of the terms down, go on the module and click on the activities and try your hand at one of the root word activities for that section.

For drug calculation, it is a lot to learn, but if you take it one concept at a time, you will feel less overwhelmed, just sit down and start going through the module, AND your drug calculation book it will explain each method and give you step by step examples, practice questions, and finally a module test so you can test your understanding.

If you alternate learning these like one thing everyday you will have a skills mastered in no time, dont feel overwhelemed, I already work in the hosptial and it can be overwhelming but learning this material is really interesting and really rewarding, everything you learn from here on out, will make you a better nurse :) You can do it. PS What campus are you going to? Good luck let me know if I can share some other tips with you. My first degree was teaching, I love to help people learn. :D

I am FINALLY sending MCG my Certificate of Immunization. Do we need need to send off the forms that document our TB Skin Test if the result was Negative?

Hello,

I am new here. I plan to apply to the Clinical Nurse Leader program, and I have a few questions for those who have been accepted.

1) Did you take the GRE or MAT? I plan to take the MAT. Do they prefer students to take the GRE?

2) Did you take any prerequisite courses online? MCG told me that they don't care if they're taken online as long as it's from an accredited institution. Do they give preference to students who take the courses at an actual institution?

3) I noticed that only anatomy/physiology courses require a lab component. Would I make myself more competitive if I take the other science courses with lab even though it's not required?

4) Did anyone take one biochemistry course instead of taking 2 chemistry courses? Would I make myself more competitive by choosing to take chemistry?

5) What is the deadline to complete all of the prerequisites?

I basically want to make myself as competitive as possible. I don't want to take chemistry (need to take college algebra first) or the extra labs, but I will if it will count against me somehow. Thankfully a local community college offers 8 week terms.

I sincerely appreciate any help or feedback. Thank you.
