MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010

Published

I have applied to MCG's MSN-CNL Program to start in Fall 2010, and I am wondering if current/past students could tell me when (as in what month) they received a phone call for an interview or acceptance/rejection letters.

Additionally, I applied to the Athens Campus program, so will the interview be held in Athens, or will I need to drive to Augusta? Thanks for helping me plan ahead :) I really hope I am the type of candidate they are looking for!

@trin22: I have a few answers for you, and everyone else can probably help you with the rest.

- I don't think there's any preference to the GRE or MAT as long as you have a competitive score. I know the website gives a minimum score required, but if I were you, I would call to find out the average MAT score of last year's accepted students... it's undoubtedly higher. For example, the minimum GRE score is 900 for the CNL Program, but I believe that the average score of those accepted last year was actually around 1100.

- The two introductory chemistry courses I took were actually pre-requisites for biochemistry at my university. So, I just took the two intro's and didn't worry about taking biochemistry.

- The chemistry courses and microbiology course I took had a required lab component - I couldn't take one without the other. I don't know if this made me more competitive, but I would call or e-mail Olivia Mitchell (the CNL Program Coordinator) to see what she thinks. I think all of us here have had to contact her at least once - she's great!

- You must have all of your pre-reqs done by the time the program starts. A lot of the accepted students for Fall 2010 are actually finishing their pre-req's this summer.

@chedomani

Thank you for your response. I called MCG earlier and spoke to Ms. Mitchel- she was very helpful.

Can anyone confirm whether or not taking college algebra will be beneficial for chemistry courses? Some chemistry courses require college algebra as a prerequisite while some do not. Can it hurt you if you don't take college algebra? Thank you.

I did have to have college algebra as a pre-req for my chemistry class.

I did have to have college algebra as a pre-req for my chemistry class.

Ms. Mitchel said that college algebra is not required. She also said that I can take one biochemistry course instead of two chemistry courses.

Does anyone know if taking chemistry courses and college algebra will help us in the nursing program?

Finally rented my apartment in Macon. I love love love it. If anybody is looking for advice on apartments for the Macon campus let me know.

Financial aid summaries were posted today. Does anybody know if the amount of the Sub/Unsub loan is per semester or per year???

Jillibeeg,

Thank you so much for your response! It was very helpful :) I printed out the medical terminology terms last night and there are so many!!! I guess I should just take ONE page at a time. My problem was in high school and college, I never learned the best method to study for me. I know everyone learns differently, but all the methods I used (copying notes, flashcards, etc.) never worked, I do absolutely awful on tests and I think it's because I don't know how to go about personallizing my study method. Any advice on that?

I am working throught he medical calculation book, have not gotten too far in that yet. I work from 7:45-6 sometimes 7 at night and have 2 dogs at home, so I don't have too much time to study right now. I am quitting my job next Friday because I know it will be nearly impossible for me to work and go to school at the same time. Some people may be able to, but that would not work for me lol. Did you get the med calculation book that was recommended?

I will be going to the Athens campus, what about you?

Thanks again for your help!

Hi anybody baught the text book: Epidemiology 101? the recommended text is published in 2010. But i could see only 2009 edition online. Any help appreciated.

Ugadawg-

You are welcome. I know that everyone learns differently (that's from my teaching background). I personally learn best by teaching others, by talking aloud to myself to learn the material, and usually if I read something its in my brain for life (got that from my dad). I think that once you can focus on school you will find the method that works for you.

I am attending the Augusta campus.

I printed out the med terms and have been trying an activity that has to do with the terms as I feel like I mastered the list.

I did purchase the med calculation book and I like it better than the module that is on the course page. I feel like it breaks it down better and the puts all the pieces together so that you can solve simple and complicated drug calculations. I am doing both and feel like I am getting the hang of it. The nurses I work with told me to just sit down and do it because it will get easier the more I practice and before I know it these skills will just be another thing I can do without thinking about it too much. They said know your metric conversions inside and out and that will help tremendously.

I am sure you will do great! Just take a step back and breathe. This is the program that you worked so hard to get into, don't get discouraged before you even updated on your progress.

:yeah:

As for the Epidemiology book, I found the 2010 on half.com.

sorry i posted that when I was tired

I meant to say dont get discouraged before you even start classes, keep me updated.

Ugh, didn't even notice that. I just bought the ISBN number specified in the booklist. Hopefully they won't be too different.

Mine were organized as per term. I did this:

Login to PULSE > click Student Services & Financial Aid > click Financial Aid > click Award > click Award for Aid Year > click on the Award Overview tab > scroll down

I'm actually canceling some of my disbursement, but it isn't reflected on PULSE yet. I'm excited to be attending MCG, but their Financial Aid and Admissions offices are a lot slower than my last college - I'm not used to that :/
