McAllen Texas

U.S.A. Texas

I have read a lot of negative things about the hospitals in McAllen Texas. I was wondering if there was anybody out there that has had any positive experiences. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am currently looking at relocating for a couple of years to gain some useful experience and as a new grad this is the only offer forth coming. Thanks!

Keep in mind that McAllen is a border town with a Hispanic population of greater than 77 percent (primarily Mexican). You will need to be fluent in the Spanish language in order to effectively communicate with the vast majority of your patients and clientele. The weather is extremely hot and arid in a desert environment, which is something that many people do not desire. McAllen is situated in the Rio Grande Valley, which has more than its fair share of abject poverty.

There are valid reasons why this city is still actively hiring and recruiting new grads while other locations have slowed or stopped their pace of hiring new nurses.

Hey Commuter,

Is that still a valid statement: They are recruiting new grads??

I'm almost certain that the hospitals and other types of healthcare facilities in this region are still open to hiring new grads.

I think they are recruiting anything with a pulse.

Do you find it is a pretty standard there to hire anyone with a pulse? It seems scary... especially in an intensive care area.

I lived in the area for 3 years. Met my wife down There. I was in harlingen and would move back down There without issue after my kids move out. Its not a place to raise kids but its great if you like hunting and fishing along with various other outdoors activities. Keep in mind it is hot as *insert explitive*.... however, I would never work on a nursing floor in this region, I have a few friends that still live down there that have called safe harbor because they were assigned 15+ patients. They stick to the units now though since they tend to staff them well. The pay down there is exceptional too with experience. One of my friends with 10 years experience gets $60/HR.
