Yes of course, I'm happy to help!
About the application process: I submitted my application in November 2017 (they were due in January). I was not expecting to get into this program because it is competitive but I figured I would never know unless I tried. At the end of January I got an email saying I made it beyond the initial screening process and a request for more information (transcript and placement preferences.) I found out that I got in on February 14th. I remember how anxious I was just waiting to find out!
Tips for application: Just be yourself! When writing your essay, take your time because this part is essentially your "interview". Really show them who you are and what your goals are. For my essay, I wrote about my own personal story, values, and beliefs. I also spoke to Mayo's values/mission that I incorporate into my own life and career.
Unit: Prior to this externship I was set on becoming a peds nurse (hence my username). For my preferences I put any ICU setting or working with children or babies. When I got my placement I found out I was put on an adult PCU floor (step down ICU) and ended up loving working with this patient population! So much so that now I cannot imagine myself not working with an adult population. The pay was around $17/hr I think.
Having the opportunity to be a Summer III truly changed my life. I met so many incredible people along my journey (between the staff, residents of Rochester, and fellow Summer III's)- everyone was so kind and welcoming!
I wish you the best of luck with your endeavors! Let me know if you have any other questions :)
Hey! I was also a summer III this past summer. I would say most of the externs previously had worked at a hospital either as a CNA or patient care assistant. However, what they really care more about is what kind of a nurse you plan on being (which you talk about in your essay.) I used my job as a patient care assistant to talk about experiences I have had that shaped me into the nurse I want to be. But you could also use clinical or even other life experience to talk about that.
Hey guys! Just wanted to offer some encouragement. I was also a Summer 3 in 2018 and it was the best summer of my life! Everyone should apply. Yes, it is competitive but my thinking was always that they will be accepting 50-ish people so why not me?
Good luck in everything you do and let me know if you have any questions!

I applied for the Summer III nursing externship and I just wanted to start this forum to see where everyone is at in the application process.
