I applied for the Summer III nursing externship and I just wanted to start this forum to see where everyone is at in the application process.
@tprimeau
The prompt from last year was pretty different...something like "tell us what you want us to know about you". I touched on a few things including a personal story, work history (focusing on what I've learned from my jobs), my interests in nursing, my philosophy on nursing, and why I wanted to be a Summer 3. It was about 1600 words. Tips would be to strongly consider why you would be a good match for Mayo/why do you want to be at Mayo. Let them know why/how you plan to take advantage of the opportunity to be there. Consider how many essays they will be reading...obviously this isn't a creative writing exercise but try to make it interesting/compelling. They are looking for something "special" about your essay. It should never be just an essay about your resume. We are all special in our own way...tell them about what makes you shine!
Hope this was helpful...Feel free to ask more questions!
@INSPYR I applied too! I actually chose to write my essay about an experience I had helping a customer while working retail. I probably had some other options that would have "looked better" on paper, but my heart was just really, really in that story. I built off of nursing things I learned from it and the quality of nurse I want to be one day. So hopefully they'll see the real me in what I wrote! Good luck to you!!
Hello everyone!
I applied for the Summer III 2019 Externship also. Does anybody know if we have to complete an interview? I had to do an online interview for a couple other externships, so I didn't know if I should prepare myself for an interview or not.
@543212345 I was asking myself the same question! Here is my nursing-related background: completion of my required nursing clinical rotations thus far, a nursing study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa where I volunteered at children hospitals and local clinics, volunteering at a local hospital, and involvement in a mentorship program through my university's student nurse association. I hope that they aren't putting a lot of weight on having a CNA license because I never got mine!
Hey guys! I applied for the internship and I don't have my CNA, but I worked as a tech for 9 months (the hospital I worked at did on the job training, so I didn't need a CNA liscense) How long were your essays? Mine was about 3 pages double spaced, I had no idea how long to make it so I just went with what felt right. I'm trying not to get my hopes up for this because I know it's super competitive, my gpa is by no means spectacular, but this would be such an amazing opportunity!! Does anybody know when we'll hear from them?

Mine ended up being 2 pages long... not quite sure what they were thinking for length!!! I am very nervous about this whole process. I applied to a few other internships but this is the one I really want (like many others haha)
