Mayo Clinic Summer III 2012

Good Afternoon,

I have been reading the previous comments. It seems as if people think that if you don't have a 3.85 gpa you will not be selected. GPA is only a number and most employers do not care about your GPA after graduation. What they do care about is that you will make a great nurse. A student may be book smart and have an excellent GPA from an excellent school;however, that does not mean they will be a good nurse. This is why Mayo not only looks at your GPA but also your clinical letter of rec, essay, cover letter, and resume.

From what I understand, Mayo is looking for a well-rounded individual. So don't worry if your GPA is not the best, you could be the one selected above a student with a 4.0. Keep your head up. :)

Please see my comment below about GPA. Even though you have a 3.4 that is still very good. I like your comment about your passion for nursing because that is what it is really about.

Your welcome. I was not a previous Summer III however, I did apply for the externship this year. I have had contact with previous Summer III's and they all tell me that GPA does help a little but if they see you have a great GPA but your clinical reference, cover letter, essay and resume are lacking then you will not get selected. So there is hope for everybody, even with a 8% chance.

I can not wait until we all get our letters. :)

I'm doing my Advanced Med-Surg intensive right now, so I'm trying to focus on that while we wait for the letters. At least one could hope.

I'm applying to about 8 different internships, but Mayo is definitely my top choice. Doesn't sound too promising, unfortunately... Oh, well. Good luck everyone!

Want to hear about my crazy night last night, everyone? So I got home from class at about 7:00 and I checked me email. I got an email from HR saying my faculty reference was missing from my application and I had until Friday at noon to get it to her! I KNOW my clinical instructor turned it in so I guess the link didn't work! I had to find someone who had my instructors phone number and call her to tell her the situation. Luckily she got it in that evening. But oh man! What a stressful evening! I'm sooo thankful Mayo gave me a chance to send that again! But this situation either made me look bad OR they really loved my application and they needed the final piece to be able to accept me. Haha!

Hi everyone,

I am a nursing student at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities and I have talked to someone who was an SIII last year. He said they go through your entire application (not just your GPA) and assign points to the different categories (GPA, health care experience, volunteer experience, involvement in school, essays, faculty recommendations...) However he did mention that GPA counts for a good amount, so the higher your GPA is, the more points you will get. Then at the end, they take the top 102 applicants with the highest points. There is really no preference for school, state, gender, or race...

Well it's good that the emailed you. That would have been nerve wracking to put all that work in and not have part of the application in.

Thanks for this post; it makes the most sense. It always seems like people hear the craziest things during application time. A friend told me that you don't find out what unit you are on at the time of acceptance. She said that you have to wait another month or so. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yea, I have also heard that. You find out whether you're in or not then I think a month later--sometime in March they tell you the unit you'll be working on.
